It's hard to put into words what a single individual can mean to not only you, as an individual, but to a 101 year old society.
Joe was without a shadow of a doubt a once in a lifetime member to our society. He was not only instrumental with keeping the North Hill Community alive and well, but frankly, is one of the main reasons we have been able to promote our club in so many different ways and is one of the main reasons we made it to our 100th Anniversary.
We honored Joe in the most intimate way we can, by making him an Honorary A-Member, which he was so proud to say. His whole family jumped on that train with him and have been just as involved, holding up the Schaetzle name as a standard for commitment in our society. Cheryl, his loving wife, has been by his side at every event, volunteering her time doing countless tasks and giving a helping hand. Jolynn, his daughter, is the driving force to make our Night at The Races Event so successful, and has contributed to so many other events, continuing to make Joe proud that he could make such an impact, not alone, but with his family. It even has passed to his grandson Rowan, who proudly says he is Italian like his Papa Joe.
We will miss you Joe. Thank you for doing all that you have done for the North Hill Community at large, as well as our club. Your impact on all of us will never fade and we will do our best to continue to honor your commitment to the club. Love you Smokin Joe.
"Joseph Schaetzle passed away on October 5, 2026 after a brief illness. As usual, he was surrounded by people who loved him. He was 71 years old. Few people enjoyed life as much as Joe Schaetzle. He was a resident of North Hill for most of his life, graduating from North High School and The University of Akron. He was involved in local politics and was an active member of many clubs and organizations, with the emphasis on ‘active.’ Joe threw himself into everything he did. Among the organizations that benefitted from his membership was the Carovillese Club where he was given an honorary ‘A’ membership. He was a Precinct Committee member of the Democratic Central Committee, and a founding member of the North Hill Social Club.
His career was in public service, working for the Summit County Board of Elections, the Auditor’s Office, and the Executive’s Office. He also had a well-known business on North Hill called Barbeque Joe’s. Joe never met a stranger, and he was true to his friends and his responsibilities.
He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph, his mother, Roberta, brother, Ted, and stepson, Todd Irwin. He is survived by his wife, Cheryl, daughter, Jolynn, grandson Rowan Joseph stepdaughters, Julie Irwin- Strazinsky and Kelly Irwin, grandchildren, Madison, Mitchell, and Taylor Strazinsky, and Judd and Layla Felix, sisters, Sue Ann and Roberta (Ron) Ross, nephews Brian and Mark Ross.
Calling hours will be conducted on Monday, October 19th from 10:00am until 11:00am at Blessed Trinity, 300 E. Tallmadge Ave., Memorial Mass to follow. There will be a Celebration of Life following the service. Which is fitting. No one loved a party more than Joe Schaetzle."
