August is Intersectionality Awareness Month.

Although Kimberle Crenshaw coined the term "intersectionality" in the late 1980s, it is based on a concept developed over many decades by Black and Indigenous feminists and other women of color. Today, the conversation about how social and political identities, such as race, gender, class, sexuality, and ability, overlap to create unique combinations of discrimination and privilege, how violence operates in institutionalized ways, and how marginalized groups disproportionally experience violence, is as urgent and critical as ever.

Each quarter, we gather surveys from clients who have gone through our programs and services, including shelter, case management, support groups, therapy, court advocacy, and more. This feedback helps us understand the impact of our work and how we can continue to better support survivors.

Over the weekend, Hope & Healing was able to support our community at Akron Pride Festival. 🌈 We thank all those who braved the rain to march in solidarity and stopped by our table to connect. A special thank you our amazing staff who literally held down our vendor booth in the inclement weather, to Chill Artisan Ice Cream for creating a special ice cream flavor for us, and to the city of Akron for having us as part of this celebration.

Male survivors of IPV and sexual violence often face disbelief, stigma, and misclassification within clinical and legal systems. This training addresses how gender bias shapes assessment, diagnosis, and response to male disclosures. Participants will examine evidence-based research on female-perpetrated IPV, male trauma presentation, and the mental health impact of unaddressed trauma, while developing practical skills for responding to disclosures without re-traumatization.

We are so excited to be a part of the tenth annual Akron Pride Festival this weekend in downtown Akron! 🌈

To celebrate, we teamed up with Chill Artisan Ice Cream, a locally-made artisan ice cream shop in Akron and Medina, to produce an original flavor. We asked our office what hope and healing taste like to them, and while there were several great suggestions, lavender honey was the winner! 💜🍯

So, this Saturday, get yourself a treat, stop by our booth, and learn more about the services we provide to all survivors.🍦

In response to recent allegations of domestic violence involving a public figure, our CEO, Teresa Stafford-Wright spoke to the Ohio Capital Journal about the increase in demand for services.

While headlines can bring attention to one particular case, Stafford-Wright said it’s important to remember that the person next door may be dealing with the same thing, and having someone that can help when the time is right will be vital.

“Try not to tell the person what they need to do in this moment, because sometimes you may alienate them,” Stafford-Wright said. “Definitely know the resources, be a listening ear, and stay close to that person.”
