Last week, Signal Akron interviewed Hope & Healing CEO Teresa Stafford-Wright about federal funds that have not been paid out as promised. “I don’t want to scare people that we’re closing; that’s not where we are,” Stafford-Wright said. “We are just afraid we will not be able to continue serving how we serve today.” While these delays are causing a lot of stress, we remain committed to the prevention of violence through action and empowerment, and providing trauma-informed services to survivors of domestic and intimate partner violence, sexual violence, and human trafficking in Medina and Summit Counties, Ohio.

A new article from Signal Akron details the rise in domestic violence-related homicides following the release of the Summit County Domestic Violence Fatality Report assembled by the fatality review committee, consisting of law enforcement, prosecutors, and victim service agencies like Hope & Healing. Summit County Prosecutor Elliot Kolkovich describes the difficult process of DV cases moving through the criminal justice system and emphasizes the importance of early intervention. “We need to support survivors early in the situation, not at the end of it,” says Hope & Healing CEO, Teresa Stafford-Wright. The report recommends expanding law enforcement training, including improving primary aggressor identification in same-sex cases, as well as increasing awareness of survivor services.

Hope & Healing's 24/7 crisis hotline connects callers with trauma-trained specialists who help assess immediate safety needs and develop exit plans, including temporary shelter placement and coordination with legal and housing services. If you or someone you know needs support, the hotline is available by call or text at 330-374-1111.

Hope & Healing was honored to be included in the 25th Anniversary celebration of the Gay Community Endowment Fund! It was an amazing night with community leaders. We were especially inspired by the remarks of Jim Obergefell, whose historic fight for marriage equality helped change our nation. His reflections on courage, community, and the ongoing work of advancing equality served as a powerful reminder that progress is made when people come together to stand up for one another.

Hope & Healing Survivor Resource Center was among the first organizations to receive support from GCEF. Since then, that partnership has helped the agency continue providing safety, advocacy, and healing services for LGBTQ+ survivors of domestic violence, sexual violence, stalking, and human trafficking.

As we celebrate this milestone, we are grateful for the Gay Community Endowment Fund's longstanding commitment to equity, inclusion, and community care. Together, we continue working toward a future where all survivors are supported, affirmed, and safe.

Congratulations on this remarkable milestone and thank you for helping make hope and healing possible for so many.

Hope & Healing Survivor Resource Center will host a two-day Summer Symposium titled “Shifting the Culture: Boys, Men, and the Manosphere” on June 29-30 from 9:30am – 3:00pm at East Akron Neighborhood Development Corporation (550 S Arlington St, Akron, OH 44306).

Presented in partnership with A Call to Men, a national organization helping to create a world where men and boys are loving and respectful, and women, girls, and those at the margins are valued and safe. This event is free, educational and guarantees enriching conversation about the "Manosphere," a loose network of online communities promoting misogyny across social media platforms. Swipe through to learn more, including its effects, warning signs, and how we can combat it.

Hope & Healing’s Director of Prevention, Julius Payne, explains, “We want to unpack this, talk about the narratives, how to create counter-narratives, and see what is impacting our youth today.”

Anyone who has a direct influence on boys and young men (teachers, coaches, community members) is encouraged to attend and can even submit their own message about manhood to encourage and empower the next generation by emailing [email protected]. Interested attendees are asked to register by June 21st. Lunch is included at no cost.

Domestic violence deaths in Summit County increased dramatically in 2025, with eight lives lost to domestic violence-related incidents, far above the one or two deaths typically seen in previous years. As highlighted in this recent Ideastream story, Summit County's Domestic Violence Fatality Review identified critical opportunities to strengthen prevention and response efforts in our community.

Among the findings: 75% of victims reviewed had left or were in the process of leaving an abusive relationship, one of the most dangerous times for survivors. The review also found that many offenders had prior histories of violence, underscoring the need for improved screening, risk assessment, and intervention.

Hope & Healing is advocating for enhanced training for law enforcement and parole officers, implementation of evidence-based lethality assessment tools, and increased awareness of available survivor services. These are not just recommendations, but opportunities to save lives.

Domestic violence is preventable, and preventing future fatalities requires all of us working together.
