Thank you to the Summit County Court of Common Pleas - Ohio's partnership with Domestic Violence Intervention Court.

And thank you to our very own Katie Howell, who provided an informative presentation focused on the important distinction between no contact orders and protection orders. Howell educated court staff on how these legal tools differ in purpose, scope, and enforcement, while highlighting gaps that can leave survivors vulnerable.

We’re grateful to the Akron Community Foundation for awarding Hope & Healing a grant supporting critical HVAC repairs at our emergency shelter. 💜 This investment helps us maintain a functional space where survivors and their families can focus on what matters most: maintaining stability and building a path forward.

Our HVAC system is essential to keeping our shelter kitchen operating safely so we can provide three meals a day for up to 100 residents, bringing comfort and a sense of home to residents during an incredibly difficult time in their lives.

Last year saw an alarming increase in domestic violence fatalities in Summit County, with a quarter of them involving fi****ms.

Teresa Stafford-Wright, CEO for Hope and Healing Survivor Resource Center, warns that gun threats or access to a gun tremendously increases chances of gun violence in a relationship.

“Take those threats serious. You know, your life may be in danger. Especially [when] someone has access to a gun…violence is already present in the relationship,” she says.

It is still Hispanic Heritage Month, and last week we celebrated International Translation Day.

For survivors, asking for help can be difficult under any circumstances. Language barriers, concerns about confidentiality, cultural expectations surrounding family and relationships, mistrust of institutions and previous experiences of discrimination can create additional obstacles. Our goal is to reduce those barriers and ensure survivors can access support in ways that feel safe, respectful, and responsive to their experiences.

Our community wide Trick-or-Treat Scavenger Hunt is underway!

In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we’re partnering with communities throughout the area to raise awareness about domestic violence and the resources available to survivors.

Here’s how it works: Visit the listed community locations, find the purple pumpkin, collect candy and resources, and have your passport stamped at each stop. Once you’ve completed your passport, return it to Hope & Healing to receive a prize!

We are overwhelmed with gratitude for our community who showed up for survivors in a big way at A Night of Hope & Healing last week. The Bank at East End was decorated beautifully in our colors, and its staff created the most elegant, welcoming atmosphere for our guests. Dove AV went above and beyond to make sure every speaker was heard and each slide appeared at exactly the right time. Our emcee, Danita Harris, engaged the crowd with energy and enthusiasm all evening, and HUBBS GROOVE drew people to the dance floor until the very end.

Amongst all this joy, we did not forget the gravity of our work and the purpose of the occasion. Our CEO, Teresa Stafford-Wright, emphasized recent events regarding sexual assault, honored those we have lost to domestic violence, and highlighted innovations Hope & Healing has achieved in the midst of funding uncertainty. Our newest board member, Stephanie Lowry (Blooms of Resilience ), gave an impassioned speech about her own experience with Hope & Healing's services. Annunciation Akron Greek Orthodox Church accepted the NO Harm Award (made by Akron Glass Works) for its integral part in our Holiday Giving Program, ensuring survivors and their families in shelter have had a happy holiday season for the past five years.

Thanks to our sponsors, raffle and auction donors, and every single person in the room who bought a ticket, placed a bid, or made a donation, we will continue to provide free, comprehensive services for survivors in Summit and Medina Counties. Without supporters like you, we would not be able to sustain our mission.
