Freedom begins where hiding ends.

In John 3, Jesus reveals that the greatest obstacle to walking in the light is often our fear of being exposed. Yet the very things we work so hard to conceal are the things He longs to bring into His redeeming light. Confession is an invitation to stop hiding, come into agreement with the truth, and allow the Holy Spirit to transform what darkness has kept hidden.

At Firelands, one of our core values is Authenticity: the courage to be fully known. We believe freedom is found in Spirit-led transparency. As we cultivate this within our homes and covenant community, we become a people who no longer fear the light, but welcome it—knowing that the God who reveals our sin is also faithful to forgive, cleanse, and restore us.

Jesus could go low because He knew exactly who He was.

In John 13, Jesus gets up from the table, wraps a towel around His waist, and begins washing His disciples’ feet. In the first-century world, washing dusty feet was a lowly act of hospitality—typically performed by a servant, not the honored person at the table.

And yet John intentionally tells us what Jesus knew before He stooped down:

“Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God…” (John 13:3)

Then He picked up the towel.

Jesus wasn’t serving because He had forgotten His position. He served because He was completely secure in it.

The King took the posture of a servant without becoming any less of a King.

That is the model Jesus gives us for servanthood. When our identity is secure in the Father, going low is no longer threatening. We don’t have to protect our importance, prove our value, or make sure someone notices what we contributed. We are free to serve because we already know who we are.

Jesus finishes by telling His disciples, “I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you” (John 13:15).

The towel was never a loss of identity. It was the fruit of a secure one.

Submission begins with awe.

Throughout Scripture, encounters with the holiness of God have a way of putting everything back into its proper place. Isaiah sees the Lord high and lifted up and becomes immediately aware of his own condition. Job encounters the greatness of God and is humbled. John sees the glorified Jesus and falls at His feet.

Before submission is about another person, a position, or an authority structure, it is about our response to God.

As we recover the awe of God—remembering that He is holy, powerful, good, just, merciful, and completely trustworthy—submission becomes less about forced compliance and more about rightly ordered allegiance.

And from that center, it begins to shape everything else: our character, our relationships, the way we handle authority, and the way we live together as the Body of Christ.

There are moments when the love of God comforts us, and there are moments when His love refuses to leave us where we are.

Sunday held both.

Jesus has already shown us what wholehearted love looks like. The Son gave Himself fully to us. He did not offer us a portion of Himself while withholding the rest. He gave His body, His blood, and His life. The Bread of Life was broken for us, and the One who promised living water poured Himself out completely.

The One who withheld nothing from us now invites us to withhold nothing from Him.

God’s desire for our whole hearts does not begin with a demand; it begins with His own self-giving love. We love because He first loved us, and we surrender because He first gave Himself for us.

This is why even the confrontation of God is an expression of His love. He loves us too much to leave us living on substitutes, looking to other things for what can only be found in Him. His compassion and His jealousy are not competing expressions of His character. They come from the same heart of a Father who wants His children whole.

Perhaps this is the mercy of this moment: we do not have to keep circling what God is giving us grace to leave behind.

The One who gave Himself without reserve is inviting us to open our hands again—to receive His love, surrender what has competed for our hearts, and give ourselves fully to Him.

There is only one throne. And He is worthy of the whole heart.

Throughout Scripture, encounters with the holiness of God realigns people. Isaiah sees the Lord high and lifted up and becomes immediately aware of his own condition. Job encounters the greatness of God and finds himself humbled. John sees the glorified Jesus and falls at His feet. Awe has a way of putting everything back into its proper place.
 
Before submission is about another person, a position, or an authority structure, it is about our response to God. We cultivate the awe of God by remembering who He is—holy, powerful, good, just, merciful, and completely trustworthy. The more clearly we see Him, the less we have to manufacture surrender. Reverence begins to produce it in us.
 
This can also be deeply healing.
 
For those who have experienced authority as controlling, harmful, or unsafe, human failure can distort what it means to come under authority at all. But God does not ask us to understand His headship through the brokenness of people. He gives us Jesus.
 
Jesus shows us authority without manipulation, strength without domination, and leadership expressed through love and service. In Him, we encounter a King we can trust.
 
As awe is restored, so is our understanding of submission. We learn again what it means to come under the headship of Someone who is entirely good.
 
And from that place, we can begin to understand Paul’s words in Ephesians 5:21: “submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.”

This past Wednesday at Firelands School of Ministry, Benjamin Dietrick taught on Standing in the Shaking—reminding us that the shaking around us can become a place of refining within us.

Hebrews 12 tells us that we are receiving “a kingdom that cannot be shaken” and, in the same breath, reminds us that “our God is a consuming fire.”

As we look toward the return of Jesus, the invitation is not to fear the shaking, but to let God refine us through it—becoming a people prepared for the King.

When you know where the story is going, the present begins to look different. The ordinary becomes significant. Faithfulness becomes exciting. Forgiveness matters. The way you love your family matters. The prayers no one hears matter. Choosing obedience when no one is watching matters. The small yes matters. Eternity gives weight to ordinary life.

Paul tells us to “look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen,” because what we see is temporary—but what we cannot yet see is eternal (2 Corinthians 4:18). That is not an invitation to disengage from this life. It is an invitation to live it fully awake—with our eyes fixed beyond what is temporary and our lives invested in what will remain.

We know how the story ends. Jesus is alive. His Spirit is within His people. The gospel is going to the nations. The King is returning. And one day, He will make all things new.

So there is tremendous joy in getting to be alive right here, in this part of the story. We get to love well. Build faithfully. Make disciples. Pray. Worship. Carry His presence. Spend our lives preparing the way for the King we love.

This is what it means to live in light of eternity: to let the certainty of what is coming fill the present with purpose, courage, and joy.

So live ready. 
Live awake. 
Live with eternity in your eyes and Maranatha in your heart.

The King is coming.

Last night we kicked off Firelands School of Ministry: Tactical Theology!! 🔥

Aaron Baker opened our year with the Eternal Storyline and a reminder we don’t want to forget: Eternity dignifies the ordinary.

The patience you choose. The truth you tell. The forgiveness you extend. The quiet obedience no one sees.

It all matters.

This is Tactical Theology—truth that moves from what we believe into the way we actually live.

What a way to begin. We can’t wait for next Wednesday!

We’re only two days away from the start of Firelands School of Ministry, and there’s still time to join us!

This fall, we’re setting our sights on three things:

1️⃣ Increase biblical literacy.
We want to be a church that follows the Son—where the Word becomes flesh and dwells among us. We want to know Scripture, understand it, and build our lives upon it.

2️⃣ Get rooted in sound theology.
Theology is the study of God, and our pursuit begins with Him. We’re becoming a Christocentric people who understand the knowledge of the Holy.

3️⃣ Move from information to demonstration.
Truth was always meant to become a way of life. We want what we believe to transform our marriages, our families, our work, our decisions, and the way we represent Jesus in the world.

This is Tactical Theology: Truth for Everyday Life.
