💜 FIT VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: SHERIL 💜
Some people find FIT because they’re looking for somewhere to volunteer.
Some find FIT because someone tells them, “You need to come check this place out.”
And sometimes… you find FIT because your heart was already looking for exactly this. ❤️
Meet Sheril! 👋
Sheril has been volunteering with FIT for 3–6 months, jumping in wherever she’s needed — from food preparation and events to whatever needs done.
She first found FIT because Donnie Jean recommended she give it a try.
And we’re pretty glad she did. 🥰
Sheril says she has always had a heart for the underserved population, and FIT was what she had been looking for.
So what keeps her coming back?
Community.
Being allowed to serve alongside amazing volunteers.
And the joy and gratitude. ❤️
When we asked Sheril if there was a particular FIT memory that has stuck with her, her answer was beautifully simple:
“Serendipity that keeps showing up.”
And honestly… if you’ve spent time at FIT, you understand exactly what she means.
There are moments that happen completely unexpectedly. A conversation. A laugh. Someone walking through the door at exactly the right moment. A need being met. A connection being made.
Little pieces of serendipity that remind us why we keep showing up. ❤️
Sheril says FIT has taught her acceptance and love — with a great bit of humor thrown in. 😂
And when asked how FIT has changed the way she sees homelessness, she said:
“We are equal at the foot of the cross. Those are the least of these.”
That perspective is at the heart of what we do.
Our friends aren't categories.
They aren't labels.
They aren't statistics.
They are people. People with stories. People with worth. People who deserve to be seen, heard, loved and treated with dignity. ❤️
Now for something you probably DON'T know about Sheril…
🌴 She is a California-born-and-bred hippie! 🌴
And if Sheril could have one superpower while doing FIT outreach?
😂😂😂
STOP AGING — IN FACT, SUBTRACT 20 YEARS.
We fully support this superpower. 😂
You know you're a FIT volunteer when…
“There’s a chance change is around the corner and it’s all good.” ❤️
And if you asked Sheril to describe FIT in three words, she chose:
COMPASSION. ACCEPTANCE. GENEROSITY.
Pretty perfect. ❤️
When asked what she wants someone who has never volunteered with FIT to know about our homeless friends, she reminded us of something incredibly important:
They each have a story.
Every single person.
A story we may not know.
A life we may not understand.
A journey that brought them to where they are today.
And finally, for anyone thinking about volunteering but feeling nervous or wondering if they have anything to offer, Sheril has a simple message:
“God equips the willing.” ❤️
Sheril, thank you for being willing.
Thank you for showing up.
Thank you for serving.
Thank you for bringing your compassion, your humor and your California hippie spirit to FIT. 😂❤️
Lastly, Sheril shared the following: I have a passion to served the disenfranchised as I had a brother who died homeless. He shaped my love for people who don’t believe they deserve to be heard. His voice, like all of our friends, resonates to the core of my soul. It is a privilege to be able to do life with such great people as the volunteers at FIT and our friends are my people. 💗
We are so grateful you found us — and even more grateful that you stayed.
Help us show Sheril some FIT love in the comments! 👇💜
