Why did you join Eastern Star? Here's our first story to share.....
Our newly installed Worthy Grand Patron, Brother Dennis Evans joined his Masonic Lodge in 2002. By 2005, he was already serving as Master of the Lodge and had been asked to serve on the Grand Lodge Education Committee as a representative for District 7. He had also started a new job as a Principal and life was very busy with two young children. He had been asked by a couple of Lodge Brothers if he was interested in joining Eastern Star. His first response was that he was just too busy right now with work and the obligations. He already had and secretly, some of the women scared him. They were very set in their ways and ordered him about when he was trying to help with meals that they prepared for the Lodge.
One particular Saturday morning, he was traveling to Worthington to meet with MWB Steve Krekus and the Education Committee when he received a call from the Worthy Matron. She told Dennis they were at the Lodge cleaning because their Inspection was Tuesday and he needed to come and cut the grass (it's the Master's job at their Lodge to maintain the grass). He told her that he would not be home until late that day and that he had plans to cut it on Wednesday. She told him that it really needed to be done today. He asked if her husband was there and she told him yes. He then told her where the key to the shed was and that he should be able to do that. She was silent for a moment and then asked when he was going to join the Eastern Star. He told her he had no intentions of joining anytime soon if ever. She told him that if he didn't join, he would be the first Master of the Lodge to not belong to Eastern Star.
He and his wife Kim had talked about Eastern Star in the past and both had no intentions of joining. He talked to another member the next day, and inquired if his wife had to join too. She told him that she did not, but that another lady would walk with him. When he got home, he talked to Kim and told her about the conversation from the day before and that he did not want to break any kind of tradition that the guys had established. She told him that he could join if he wanted to, but she would not. He told her that it was ok because they told him another lady would walk with him. She sat up in her chair and said he would most certainly not be walking with another woman and directed him to get two petitions!
The rest is history! They came in as PGM Cathy Jones was working her way through the Grand Line and soon learned that the ladies were much different than their first impressions. Once they got to know them, they fell in love with them and became great friends.
