Kayla Scott has always been a dedicated advocate for her community. A College of Charleston alumna, a 14 year member of the MAU Workforce Solutions team, and a member of Christian Heritage Church for more than 30 years where she has been an integral part of the staff, she has spent years pouring her time and energy into serving others. Her involvement with the GVW Fire Department runs deep, from volunteering at Cookies with Santa to helping organize the annual Outdoor Halloween Movie Night for Kids and participating in the Christmas parade. She was even honored with the GVW Fire Department Community Service Award for her commitment to the community she loves. During Hurricane Helene, while many were struggling to find their footing, Kayla stepped up with her family and community to provide free meals for their town, ensuring neighbors in need were cared for. She has always been the kind of person who shows up.
But after the storm, Kayla’s own home began suffering in ways that quickly became overwhelming. Each time rain appeared in the forecast, she felt a familiar dread settle in. “Every time it rained, my stomach was in knots,” she said. “I knew I would have water coming into my house.” The leaks grew worse over time, damaging her home and eroding her sense of safety. Her neighbors worried for her, checking in often and hoping for a solution that seemed out of reach.
Through the long term recovery process with LTRG of Aiken County, Kayla was connected with Hixon’s Roofing, a company that provides residential and commercial roofing services with licensed and insured, manufacturer certified workmanship. They were able to step in quickly and address the damage to her home. From the moment they arrived, Kayla felt a shift. “Hixon was great,” she said. “They were so respectful, and I was surprised by how quickly they got it done.” The repairs not only restored her home, they also restored her peace of mind. For the first time since the storm, she could breathe again.
“It’s a huge relief,” Kayla shared. “It still doesn’t feel real that I don’t have to worry about water leaks anymore.” Her neighbors were ecstatic right alongside her, thrilled to see her home finally repaired. “They were so happy — they thought it was cool when it was finally fixed.”
Kayla has always been a steady source of support, kindness, and community spirit, a cat mom who adopts rescues, a volunteer who shows up without hesitation, and someone who constantly spreads awareness about what’s happening in her community. This time, it was the community’s turn to show up for her. Her story is a reminder of why long term recovery matters: because people who give so much of themselves deserve a safe home and a future free from fear every time it rains.
