The Whitney Barns Group has restored one historic barn and is raising funds to renovate 2 more barns on the property. Our goal is to save these historic barns in the horse district of Aiken and bring in additional revenue to the city and county of Aiken, SC. We want to provide more stalls, not only for racehorses, who have been trained in the area for so many years but also for visitors to ship in
and lease stalls to hunt, event, play polo and ride in Hitchcock Woods. These activities have brought "Winter Colony" people to Aiken since the late 19th century to enjoy the weather and participate in these equestrian activities. William Whitney built much of the infrastructure to support these activities drawing such dignitaries as Teddy Roosevelt, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. Many historic homes were built in the horse district that are now on the National register. The Whitney Barns are in close proximity to historic Hitchcock Woods, Winthrop Field, dirt roads, and the Whitney Polo Field. This allows unparalleled access to some of the best of Aiken's horse colony. Until it becomes safe to hold in person fund raising events because of Covid-19, the WBG depends on donations through mailings, Facebook and our website. www.whitneybarns.org.
