James L. Hammons
Detachment #939 Marine Corps League
Aiken SC
“All Gave Some...Some Gave All”
In recent years the Aiken Community has given generously to the "Fallen...But Not Forgotten" Cpl Matthew Dillon Scholarship Fund. You will recall that Aiken's own Matthew Dillon was killed in action in Iraq in December 2006.
In his memory, the James L. Hammons Marine Corps League Detachment #939 has raised funds to annually award $1,000.00 scholarships to an outstanding NJROTC cadet from each of our “four” local high schools.
Events in the past have featured South Carolina's Medal of Honor recipient Navy Lieutenant Mike Thornton, Fox TV contributor Lt. Col. Ollie North, Medal of Honor recipients USMC retired Colonel Harvey C. 'Barney' Barnum, US Army SFC Sammy Davis, and most recently USMC retired CWO Hershel “Woody” Williams.
On Friday, August 6th, starting at 7:00 P.M., doors open at 6:30 at the Western Carolina Fairgrounds, Lewis Wise Building, we will again celebrate those who gave all for our freedoms. This year guest speaker, US Army MG (Ret) Thomas Mullikin, will join the patriotic citizens of Aiken to remember Matt and to reflect on all our veteran's services and sacrifices. In addition, representatives of the South Carolina Gold Star families, who lost loved ones in defense of our country, will be in attendance as well as other special patriots. It will be an evening to remember!
You can support this honorable endeavor by attending our event special which includes dinner, cash bar & silent auction. Tickets for this event are modestly set at $50.00 per person. The dress is business attire. Reserve your tickets by mailing check to: MCL #939, PO Box 6046, Aiken, SC 29804-6046.
