Surya-Chandra Foundation Stop violence against women, and empower underprivileged women to rise above poverty and inequality. Why empower girls & women?

My mother and my sisters were instrumental in shaping my views on women starting at an early age of 6, subsequent to my father's untimely demise. My mother got married at 16, became a widow by 40, and raised us on her own with no marketable skills. I witnessed the ordeal of suffering and numerous sacrifices made by them for the sake of my welfare. None of my sisters were able to complete high scho

ol given the pressures of the family and the need to work at odd jobs singing and dancing at weddings and other social events of friends and neighbors. They worked very hard and long hours to earn much needed money to sustain the family in the absence of the traditional father figure. I believe that millions encounter similar tragic situation as a result of complete dependence on the male head of family. I felt that educating and empowering young girls is the only way to make a difference in the lives of many unfortunate, disadvantaged and underprivileged segments of society. We started by helping six deserving young girl students pursue college education in Chennai, India. We have partnered with ANEW (Association for Non-traditional Employment for Women) (https://www.anewindia.org/) and Sarva Vidya (https://www.sarva-vidya.org/) -- both organizations helping young women -- to educate and empower girls from very low income families and distraught segments of society. Since inception, we have supported the education and empowerment of thousands of girls and women over eight years. In 2021, we continued our support for ANEW women and Sarva Vidya girls. We have also funded YouthInvest, (https://www.youthinvestfoundation.org/) an organization for giving second chance to complete high school for 300 school dropout girls at their learning centers in Jharkand. This year, we have started supporting Kranti (https://www.kranti-india.org/) and
added education support for PCVC (https://pcvconline.org/). We have the opportunity to expand vocational training for young women, and STEM education beyond middle school for hundreds of deserving girls in 2022 and beyond. May 10th is Mother’s Day to be celebrated for all women and for the women in their lives for all men.

Here is an example story for empowering girls and women:

This Mother’s Day can be more than a personal celebration—it can be a tribute to the quiet, determined strength that defines women everywhere.

Imagine a young woman in her early twenties, raised in a sheltered environment, stepping far beyond everything she has ever known. She leaves behind the warmth and familiarity of home and arrives in a foreign country in the dead of winter, uncertain of what her future holds. She has no roadmap, no guarantees—only courage.

Very quickly, she learns that partnership does not always mean equality, and that if she wants independence, she must claim it herself. She navigates unfamiliar streets, commutes long distances, and persists through rejection until she earns her first job. That moment becomes a turning point—not just employment, but a declaration of self-reliance.

As life unfolds, she embraces change again and again—relocating across cities, becoming a mother, building a home, and continuing to learn. Despite already holding a university degree, she chooses to return to school, studying nights and weekends to gain new skills. Education becomes her tool for empowerment, sharpening both her confidence and her voice.

The years that follow are a balancing act familiar to many women. She raises children, supports a family, and often places others’ needs ahead of her own ambitions. She shows up—at school events, at practices, at home—while quietly carrying the weight of responsibility. Her sacrifices are not always visible, but they are foundational.

And yet, she does not lose herself.

When the time is right, she reclaims her professional path with determination. She steps into larger roles, takes on greater responsibility, and proves her capability in spaces that demand leadership and resilience. Over time, she rises to manage significant operations, earning not just financial independence but deep professional respect.

Decades after arriving with uncertainty, she stands as a woman transformed—not by circumstance alone, but by her own persistence. She has built a life defined by strength, adaptability, and purpose.

Her story is not unique—and that is precisely the point.

It reflects the journey of countless women who cross borders, overcome limitations, invest in themselves, and hold families and communities together while quietly forging their own independence. It is a story of resilience, sacrifice, growth, and ultimately, empowerment.

This is what woman empowerment looks like:
not a single moment, but a lifetime of choosing courage, again and again.

ANEW is an NGO based in Chennai, India. Here is a success story shared by ANEW this month:

Name: Shamitha.V
Batch:Web designing 5
Shamitha, a BCA graduate from a Government Aided College at Chennai, comes from a modest background. Raised by a single mother who works as a tailor and earns around ₹8,000 per month, Shamitha has witnessed financial struggles from a young age. Despite these challenges, she remained focused on her education and determined to build a better future for herself and her family.
With a clear interest in web technologies and design, Shamitha enrolled in the Advanced Web Designing course at ANEW. Her commitment to learning was evident throughout the course—she was punctual, hardworking, and consistently delivered high-quality work. She performed exceptionally well in her final project, securing excellent grades and impressing her trainers with both her technical ability and creative approach.
Shamitha's dedication and skills didn’t go unnoticed. Through ANEW’s placement support, she was able to attend interviews with top companies. Her perseverance paid off when she was selected by HCL Technologies with a CTC of ₹3.5 lakhs per annum. This achievement marked a major turning point in her life, opening the door to financial independence and a stable career in the IT industry.
Shamitha’s journey is a powerful example of how access to skill-based training and the right support system can change the trajectory of a young woman’s life. Her story highlights the impact of organizations like ANEW in empowering women from underserved backgrounds to achieve professional success and break the cycle of poverty.
