Heartbreaking Memories of Moonice BEFORE RESCUE at a depressing, last end feed yard. After her second year of enslavement at a deplorable factory farm dairy, Moonice was apparently not producing enough milk and was thus culled out of production and sold at auction to a private feed yard owner. The yard housed rejected and sickly dairy cows and calves that were all doomed for slaughter. The slaughterhouse was just down the road. And the cows were fed rotten apples mixed in with silage. After months of negotiations with the feed lot owner, and the tireless work of our amazing attorney, we were able to rescue Moonice, along with 4 other lucky young cows and calves. Tragically, Moonice's loyal friend and soulmate, Noonice, who had been set aside for rescue, was, without warning, shot and killed at the lot by an enraged staff member. We were so brokenhearted that poor Noonice never had the opportunity to load the rescue truck with the other bovines and haul to our breathtaking Summer Meadows facility to jump out and run on green grass for the first time. Moonice never truly recovered from the loss of Noonice, but developed lasting friendships over the years with her former feed lot friends. Moonice has such a gentle innocence about her. She is still very shy, but undoubtedly one of the kindest cows at our refuge -- and we often see butterflies following her around the meadow. ๐ฆ๐
