Agawam Community Center “Everyone in the community can make a difference.”

Agawam Community Center begins building its foundation.

When I say foundation building I am not talking about a traditional foundation of concrete, but a foundation built upon input from the local community. The Agawam Community Center already has a physical location, but is now beginning the process of reaching out to the community for suggestions regarding the types of programs and content to be offered. Please allow me to introduce myself, my name is Les Tingley and I am the Community Outreach Coordinator for the Agawam Community Center. The Center is a non-profit organization that is independent of the City of Agawam, and therefore does not have to deal with the typical red tape and slow approval processes. I chose to volunteer at the Center after meeting with its founder, Vak Chonmany, to discuss his vision and reasons for starting it. Vak’s story begins as a young child who came to this country with his family escaping their war-torn country. Vak not only expressed deep appreciation for the outpouring of help from the citizens of the United States, but also for the opportunity provided to him to acquire a solid education and eventually build his own business. As an Agawam resident, Vak wanted to give back and felt the city lacked a Community Center which would serve to enhance the lives of the community. His vision, and now mine as well, is for the Community Center to provide resources based on the wants and needs of residents.

As previously stated, we have a physical location on main street in Agawam. Vak has generously offered the use of his gym for any activity that requires a place to conduct it. As the Agawam Community Center grows we will be looking for new space to facilitate that growth, and allow us to offer more types of programs and activities. Programs already being discussed include various programs/workshops for kids, tutoring assistance programs, Meet-ups for parents of children with disabilities, as well as other suggestions that have already come in from the Agawam Community Center page.
