Ronald "Ronnie" Moyer passed away peacefully on February 14th, 2025.
He was born on February 13th, 1951, to Herbert & Estelle Moyer.
He is survived by his wife, Joan; daughter, Julie (son-in-law Caleb); son, Jared; and grandson, Kai Alexander. He is also survived by his brother, Bobby Ray (wife Linda) of Mount Pleasant, SC and sister, Carolyn (husband Buddy) of Raphine, VA.
He was predeceased by his brother, Herbert and sister, Deborah.
Ronnie was a 1969 graduate of Nelson County High School. While in high school, he won varsity letters in football and track and made the all-Central Virginia football team. In football he held a 20 year record for running the most yards. After graduation he enlisted in the Marine Corps. and served a tour of duty in Vietnam. He was awarded the National Defense Vietnamese Campaign and Vietnam Service Medals, and the Presidential Unit Citation. When he returned home, he studied Business Administration at Lynchburg College. While there, he decided to go into law enforcement and graduated from the Virginia State Police Academy in Richmond. He became a Virginia State Trooper and was stationed in Northern Virginia and later in Campbell County. He received an Associate's degree in Police Science from Central Virginia Community College. After eight years as a State Trooper Ronnie resigned and purchased the family oil business, Moyer Oil Co. He owned and operated this until he sold it to a company in Charlottesville. He remained the General Manager of the Lovingston division until his retirement. Ronnie was also a landlord and owned real estate properties throughout Nelson County.
Ronnie was a member of the American Legion and Fleetwood Harmony Masonic Lodge. He spent 40 years in the Lovingston Ruritan Club and enjoyed his monthly dinner meetings at the Lovingston Cafe. He served many years on the Board of Zoning Appeals, several years on Central Virginia crime stoppers, and over 37 years on the bank advisory board starting with People's Bank of Nelson, F&M, BB&T, and Truist.
Ronnie loved to travel and visited over 41 states and several countries. Once at the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas he was very surprised to run into residents of Nelson County (Norwood). On a bus tour in Hawaii he heard a couple talking about Nellysford. He joined the conversation and they all quickly became friends. Later on when they all returned to Virginia they met up for dinner at Wintergreen. Ronnie once took his family on a Western tour staying in a different state every night. They enjoyed it so much they did it again the following year taking a different route. Ronnie loved riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle in Sturgis, SD and Daytona Beach, FL. Ronnie was a Nascar fan and went to races whenever he got the chance. He was able to meet numerous race car drivers and flew to Atlanta to see the last Richard Petty race. His hobbies were fishing, gardening, and restoring muscle cars. Ronnie had such a green thumb that he once grew a cabbage and a turnip that were so big that they made the local news. When he was younger he owned a 1969 Super Bee that he and his wife dated in. He ended up having to sell the car for college tuition. After ten + years later he found the car in bad condition sitting in a field. He purchased the car and spent months restoring it to its original condition.
Due to many family members living on the West Coast and down South, a celebration of life will be held in the spring. In lieu of flowers please donate to the American Diabetes Association or the Wounded Warrior Project in his honor.
