Hope Valley Farmers did something a bit different last night... a bat walk! The weather was perfect - warm, still and a little humid so great for insects and for the bats which hunt for them....
Ann and Rob Hanson of the North Yorkshire Bat Group led the talk and walk for us and they were fascinating, giving us an insight into the life cycle of these incredible mammals.
We then set off on a night walk, bat detectors in hand, to find pipistrelles, pipistrelle sopranos and noctule bats under trees and near the River Noe. Then an exciting surprise to round off the evening when Rob and Ann identified a maternal roost of brown long eared bats in one of the barns back at the farm.
Bats are not always the most popular of our protected species but our farmer members admitted they had a new respect for these beautiful creatures after seeing and hearing them.

We have been talking a lot about moorland recently. We had a great turn out at our Moorland Assessment workshop held on the fabulous Abney Moor last week. A group of Hope Valley Farmers discussed the methodology to enable them to sign up to the Sustainable Farming Incentive Moorland Assessment Action.
Last night a group of Peakland Environmental Farmers, hosted by the Wentworth Estate, gathered on Strines Moor to discuss moorland restoration and management techniques with the moorland legend that is Geoff Eyre.
Plenty of challenges to talk about but lots of great ideas and experience to be shared.

Hope Valley Farmers enjoyed a rare glorious sunny evening strolling through stunning hay meadows at Riley House Farm. Discussing this important but sadly declining habitat, members learnt how to identify grasses and wildflowers. Pen Rashbass of Pasture for Life gave us an insight into the value of pasture fed livestock both nutritionally but also the environmental benefits, of which there are many.

We had an early start with Radio Sheffield this morning talking about the wader survey which we do each year on 39 farms across the Hope Valley and Bradfield Farmers areas.
We explained the purpose and benefits of the survey to Katie Galbraith of Radio Sheffield and highlighted the great work farmers and keepers are doing to encourage and protect wading bird species.
Over 40 volunteer surveyors carry out three surveys each on every farm to record curlews, lapwings, snipe and oystercatcher. Our partners, the RSPB, produce detailed reports and maps from the survey data including a full species list.
Last year, 59 different species were recorded on one farm in Bradfield, and a total of 92 species were recorded across all farms.
Thanks to the Hunt family for hosting us, to volunteer Steve for sharing his exceptional knowledge of waders and other bird species and to Jimmy the keeper for stopping by and giving an impromptu interview explaining his role in conserving wildlife.

Over the next few weeks and months we will be showcasing the wonderful food produced by Hope Valley Farmers members . In every case, the farms will be carrying out important environmental work to enhance the landscape of the Hope Valley and provide valuable wildlife habitat.
First up is free range pork from High Lees Farm. The May family have carried out a range of environmental projects on their farm including hedge creation, tree planting and managing grassland by extensive grazing without the addition of inorganic fertiliser.
The family only raise a small number of pigs very extensively at any one time so the meat will sell out very quickly! Contact Kate for more details and to place your order. Details on the flyer below.
