At Belwin, we spark passion for wild places. Through immersive community programs and environmental education, we inspire and engage people in the care of natural areas. Through land protection and habitat restoration, we revive threatened ecosystems so wildlife can thrive for generations to come. Our land serves as an ideal platform to imbue in visitors the beauty and fragility of our natural wor

ld. We have a unique opportunity, given our proximity to a large metropolitan area, to give our community a chance to see bison in their native habitat, to walk a path through towering prairie grass, or to hike through the woods and experience quiet and tranquility that is truly rare today. Through our 50-year partnership with Saint Paul Public Schools, school children visit Belwin Conservancy every day. With immersive lessons that align with core science standards, children experience nature in a way that fosters love and care for the environment. Many are forever changed by the experience. In addition to offering a respite from our busy lives, Belwin Conservancy also serves as an important venue for research. Our diverse lands and private setting gives scientists a rare opportunity to conduct long-term ecological research in an area that they always know will be protected. We hope to use this research to further our understanding of the natural processes and to develop methods for restoring lands in a manner that is economically sustainable.

Can you spot the Green frog? It’s not uncommon on these warm days to see frogs with their head sticking out of the water. This allows them to breathe and warm up their body while keeping their skin from drying out. It's also a good way to keep an eye out for any snacks buzzing by. If you have the ability, by all means, try this at home.

While an Eagle's diet is predominantly fish, they are not one to turn down an easier meal. As an opportunistic predator, Bald Eagles will take what they can get. That includes one of the many turtles in our wetland pond. Now, if only they could catch one...

Pussytoes and Pennsylvania sedge are early bloomers in a savanna habitat. They are graceful and thrive in dappled light conditions. Consider either or both of these as a turf grass alternative!

Belwin is fortunate to have several Oak savanna remnants. We know they are remnants if we find specific plant species present. Kittentails and Bird's foot violet are two such plants. Delicate, small and beautiful. These flowers are sure to bring a smile to anyone's face who sees them.

We know the season has progressed because our enthusiastic, always willing volunteers are on site helping us with our restoration work! Last week we raked and seeded a hillside near the Peter J. King Family Foundation Wetlands Center. After raking and seeding we put straw down to discourage birds from eating the seeds and to help during a rain event to keep the seeds in place. Many thanks to our dedicated crew of always willing volunteers!

Today Nina Moini of MPR News Minnesota Now interviewed Belwin Naturalist Lynette Anderson about this Saturday’s bison release. Listen to Lynette share how bison help restore and sustain prairie ecosystems: “They help create a viable, dynamic, thriving habitat for so many other creatures.” As Nina says in the interview: “They’re doing more than just munching.” 🦬

Every spring, a herd of bison stampede onto prairieland in the St. Croix River Valley. This Saturday, the Bison Festival at the Belwin Conservancy in Afton will draw hundreds of people to watch the release of the animals.
