Empowering Women Through Hygiene and Sanitation Education in Buea, Cameroon 🚰🧼

Last week, our team at EKCOLAB Cameroon carried out a hygiene and sanitation workshop with local women of the Mile 16 Bolifamba community in Buea, Cameroon.

The workshop centered on a powerful idea: women as leaders of water and how they can safeguard their homes and communities through effective hygiene and sanitation practices.

We wrapped up the session by distributing hygiene and sanitation kits, including drinking water buckets, soaps, detergents, and toilet tissues to 13 women who participated in the campaign.

The response was overwhelming. All participants expressed their satisfaction and joy in learning how to become role models who protect their families and communities.

When women are equipped with knowledge and resources, entire communities thrive.

πŸ’‘Leadership at the heart of community intervention

Last week, our team in Cameroon, together with volunteers, carried out a specialized capacity-building session to investigate contaminants in various water sources (household drinking water, stream, well, and tap water). This exercise was hands-on and brought high-level engagement regarding water quality, sanitary evaluations, contaminants, and health risks.

To safeguard local communities in Cameroon and Africa, there is a need for regular testing of baseline water quality for all known water sources used by the local population.

We are presently running multiple water quality tests across the Bolifamba local community in Buea, Cameroon. Our goal is to make available open water quality data for Buea and Cameroon as a whole.

Community Risk Explorer (🎭 A Tale of Two Realities)

Imagine a massive flash flood is about to hit an informal settlement in Africa.

🌍 Reality A: A multi-million dollar satellite map in Europe shows an orange weather alert. Two months later, an agency publishes a 40-page report. Meanwhile, families on the ground are already dealing with a flood.

⚑ Reality B: A local volunteer drops a single GPS pin online. The system instantly maps the perimeter, calculates water scarcity, climate stress, hygiene and sanitation network, contamination risks, and alerts the community to prepare sandbags three days before the storm hits.

Reality B is the EKCΓ–LAB Analytics "Community Risk Explorer."
This is Africa’s first completely free, open-source, hyper-local climate-WASH engine built to replace top-down assumptions with automated field intelligence.

πŸŽ‰ The EKCΓ–LAB Water and Climate Handbook is Available Now

We are incredibly proud to announce the release of the 1st Edition of the π„πŠπ‚πŽΜˆπ‹π€π π–πšππžπ« 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂π₯𝐒𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 π‡πšπ§ππ›π¨π¨π€: 𝐴 π‘ƒπ‘Ÿπ‘Žπ‘π‘‘π‘–π‘π‘Žπ‘™ 𝐺𝑒𝑖𝑑𝑒 π‘‘π‘œ πΆπ‘œπ‘šπ‘šπ‘’π‘›π‘–π‘‘π‘¦ 𝑅𝑒𝑠𝑖𝑙𝑖𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒, produced in collaboration with our partners.

Globally, contaminated water kills millions. In Africa, rapid population growth places immense strain on water availability, accessibility, and affordability. However, the most significant gap we identified in our work here in Buea, specifically in the Mile 16-Bolifamba involve not just a lack of infrastructure, but a lack of contextual education.

80% of schools lack up-to-date climate textbooks, and teachers are not trained to teach emerging water and climate science. This handbook is our direct response to that gap.

It moves beyond theory. It is a systematic, integrated toolkit designed for everyone from water committee leaders and health personnel to NGO workers, students, and private sector practitioners. Inside, we have compiled state-of-the-art techniques for:

βœ… WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene)
βœ… Climate change and mitigation strategies
βœ… Hands-on practical lessons and techniques for water and climate change
βœ… Waste management
βœ… Technologies for community monitory and resilience
βœ… Citizen science
βœ… Public health & hygiene strategies

By equipping local youth, women, and community leaders with the right skills and data, we build resilience from the ground up. This handbook is our contribution to ensuring that when it comes to water and climate, Africa and the world has the right tools to fight back.

We invite local communities, practitioners, policymakers, and partners to connect with us. Let's apply this knowledge together.

Workshop Experience for Stakeholders (Feedback Summary)

After an impactful workshop 1 session with the stakeholders, it was a moment to really reflect and express their gratitude for such an intervention that EKCΓ–LAB has brought to them.

Mr Nana Michael, who is the quarter head of Quarter 2 in the community, expresses his joy for what they have learnt and how it will help tremendously shape the future of the Mile 16 community.

We also heard from the women's leader, who also fully appreciated our initiative and technical depth in solving community-rooted problems.

This project is supported by Cassandra Conference

WASH and Climate Resilience Workshop 1

Strengthening local communities begins with stakeholders understanding the scope and intensity of the problems they are facing. By providing them with real-world cases in their community and local experiences, it is possible to mitigate and reduce misconceptions surrounding waterborne disease, climate change impacts and community health all together.

On Friday (19/06/2026), our dedicated team of experts in Cameroon conducted a groundbreaking workshop with the community stakeholders of Bolifamba Mile 16 in Buea. These stakeholders included various quarter heads as well as community sanitation personnel. Our primary objective was to debunk myths surrounding the topics, provide a blueprint for core knowledge, and outline the pathway to community resilience through corporate responsibility and technical know-how.

The workshop is the first of its kind within the community to tackle the topics that really matter to the local population. Our goal for the second workshop will focus on practicalizing and solidifying the knowledge they have acquired so as to enable them to become the first line of support for their various quarters in the community. Subsequent workshops will also consider strengthening the community women's groups to create a unified community resilient framework.
