The LVH ALS Foundation was formed with and in memory of Larry Vance Hughes. Larry Vance Hughes was an amazing husband, son, father, friend, Christian, businessman…and so much more. He grew up in Burnsville, North Carolina with his parents and two older brothers. Larry attended Western Carolina University and then entered the accounting field, where he built a successful 40-year career, retiring in
2013, as the Managing Partner of Healthcare at Dixon Hughes Goodman. Well known and well loved in his field, Larry truly left a legacy. If you knew Larry, you knew that retirement didn’t slow him down. He pursued his passion of knowledge and love of God, by embarking on a Masters of Arts in Practical Theology at Pfeiffer University. As well, he was able to serve and give back to the community by taking on a new position in the office of the COO at Samaritan’s Purse. Surrounded by his family and friends, Larry was diagnosed with ALS in the fall of 2013. Soon after, they joined him in his battle against ALS knowing that while Larry’s life would sadly be cut short, their efforts might someday save another family member or loved one. Larry’s family and friends believed that by forming The LVH ALS Foundation, not only would it honor Larry, but it would provide hope to future generations through its crucial fundraising efforts to fight this disease. The passion and drive Larry had – and his tireless efforts to give his time to so many – have impacted all involved in the work of the foundation that bears his name. Larry was never one to ask for sympathy and through his strong faith, accepted his fate with the knowledge that God would use him for a greater good. With heavy hearts, Larry’s family and friends said goodbye to the man they loved on November 12, 2014. Larry is survived by his wonderful wife of 21 years, Kim; son Johnathan and wife Tammy; daughter Sarah and husband Ashley; two stepsons, Josh and wife Ashley and Brett and wife Wendy; and six grandchildren who all brought him great joy. Our purpose is simple: change the lives of those who are directly and indirectly affected by ALS. The mission of the LVH Foundation is to provide funding to endow a professorship of ALS at Duke University – not only to help those today with ALS, but more importantly to find a cure for ALS in the future. The LVH ALS Foundation was established in 2014 by the family of the late Larry Vance Hughes. It quickly became one of the largest most successful ALS foundations within North Carolina. Through a partnership with Duke University, the foundation is committed to raising funds and awareness to find a cure for ALS. Under the leadership of Dr. Richard Bedlack, Duke University in Durham, NC has one of the largest and most comprehensive ALS Clinics in the world. The professorship we seek to establish would allow Dr. Bedlack to focus solely on ALS patient care, research and advocacy, and would be one of only four in the country. ALS (Amytropic Lateral Schlerosis) is a degenerative disease that leads to progressive weakness and ultimately death. To date, there is no cure for ALS, but we do have HOPE.
