As you sit with this image, notice shapes, colors, textures, details, symbols, and ask, "To what part of the image is my eye drawn? What calls my attention?" Linger with the image, letting feelings, memories, and wonderings come up; letting the imagination take you more deeply into prayer. Ask: "How does this artwork speak to me? To what/whom am I being called or invited?"

In the United States, 97.1% of the population is comprised of immigrants or descendants of immigrants, according to the most recent U.S. Census. Millions of immigrants continue to move to the United States, with individuals coming from Mexico, India, China, and the Philippines. The United States has a history of being a place where immigrants place their hopes because of its access to education, practice of religious freedom, and the prospect of economic stability. (Adrian Dominican Sisters Office of Justice, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion)

As we celebrate Immigrant Heritage Month, we are reminded of the incredible courage it takes to leave everything familiar and start anew. Immigrants and refugees enrich our society with new perspectives, innovation, and vibrant traditions. Let’s use this month to honor those stories and advocate for a compassionate, fair, and welcoming community.

What is your heritage story?

Sisters and Co-workers are working hard today, despite the heat, to help clean up our campus and make it even more beautiful! We love to see the smiles and hear the chatter as our ADS community comes together to accomplish a goal.

With the rest of the world, we are living in a time of great stress and uncertainty. Our Sisters have learned so much as they have lived through challenging times. These experiences, coupled with their grounding in scriptures, help them navigate times like those we are in now, and they share with us, through this video series, some ways in which they find grace amidst struggles.

Associate Judith Engel, a former Adrian Dominican Sister, is another featured artist in the "Engage: The Art of Women" exhibit currently on display in the new INAI at Madden Gallery.

Judith has been an artist since she was 2 years old and now focuses on watercolor and some sculpture. She says that β€œbeing an artist means to be open to the creative spirit that God has given to all of us and to do our best to be a channel. It’s a way of communicating with people that sometimes uses words, sometimes music, colors, and shapes – all of those avenues that God has given us in terms of communication and expression.”

The Adrian Dominican artists have discovered that their art – and encouraging art in others – can benefit others in significant ways. As an Associate, Judith has used her art to inspire and benefit people. As a teacher in the Detroit Public Schools retirement and GED programs and as an art teacher to refugees in Toronto, she helped people to use art to express their own perspectives on the challenges of their lives. β€œI discovered the whole idea of what art could do for people who are in difficult and painful situations – and the gift that it could be to give people a voice,” Judith said.
