TRCP’s new Oregon Field Representative, Tristan Henry, looks back on a recent chukar hunt and forward to the work that must be done to safeguard this iconic landscape.

"I’ve been lucky to spend many days in the field chasing chukar, hunting mule deer, and throwing dry flies and streamers across the vast expanse of public lands that constitute southeast Oregon’s Owyhee country. It’s a rare treat to sip coffee with a bird dog by your side around a morning fire as you watch the first burst of sunlight rise above the Owyhee plateau. Out there, in sagebrush-covered solitude, it can be tempting to want to save the last best places for ourselves, but sharing it is something far more powerful." - Tristan Henry.

Last week, the Malheur Community Empowerment for the Owyhee Act (S. 1890) successfully passed through committee and now awaits consideration from the Senate. The Owyhee Sportsmen are pleased to report that important provisions for fish, wildlife, and hunting and angling traditions are included in the bill language. Thanks to the leadership of Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley, the legislation received bipartisan support in committee.

“The Malheur Community Empowerment for the Owyhee Act preserves both a treasured way of life and a treasured landscape,” said Senator Wyden. “This legislation is the product of years of hard work with Malheur County ranchers, Tribes, conservationists and recreation lovers who all came together to develop what I believe should be a framework for conservation nationwide.”

Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley have reintroduced legislation to protect Oregon’s Owyhee Canyonlands!

If passed, S. 1890 would permanently protect fish and wildlife habitat on over a million acres in southeast Oregon. This region includes the Owyhee River, the Trout Creek Mountains, and key winter range and habitat for big game, chukar, and other species that offer prime hunting and outdoor related activities which sustain thousands of jobs.

“This bill provides a key opportunity to do right by sportsmen and the fish and wildlife we depend on by safeguarding this iconic winter range and wild, backcountry landscape long into the future.” said Kevin Martin, state board member for the Oregon Wild Sheep Foundation.

Thank you to Senators Wyden and Merkley for championing this legislation that will provide needed funding for local economic development and help protect and restore the sagebrush steppe.

There’s no place we’d rather be during a spring weekend than fishing the Lower Owyhee River for beautiful browns. Just another reason why this landscape is so special.

Volunteers needed for the Lower Owyhee Ground Count! The Idaho, Oregon, and Nevada (ION) Partnership is assisting the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife with a Saturated Bighorn Sheep Ground Count in the Lower Owyhee herd range on May 20th.

This is a great opportunity to explore the Owyhee landscape and do meaningful work with the Oregon Wild Sheep Foundation!

We’re excited to share this video highlighting the work of Oregon Wild Sheep Foundation, state and federal wildlife agencies, and the many others participating in the ION partnership, a joint state effort to cooperatively manage California bighorn sheep populations.

California bighorn populations were once robust across their range but are now dwindling. In hopes of learning more about the causes of this decline, the ION partnership was created to carry out surveying and monitoring work across Idaho, Oregon and Nevada.

Stay tuned for more updates on the partnership!

The Malheur Community Empowerment for the Owyhee Act, was heard yesterday in the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee.

The bill, reintroduced by Senator Ron Wyden earlier this year, would resolve long standing conflicts over land designations throughout the Owyhee landscape while also providing local development opportunities, increased flexibility for grazing permittees, and improved habitat for fish and wildlife including native redband rainbow trout, sage grouse, pronghorn and California bighorn sheep.

The Owyhee Sportsmen Coalition will continue to work with other local stakeholders, Congressman Cliff Bentz, the Administration, and others to refine the bill and ensure that S. 4860 achieves its promise for public lands, fish and wildlife, and the Malheur County economy.

Members of the Owyhee Sportsmen Coalition spent last week fishing and camping along the Lower Owyhee River.

Hard to beat sunny skies, great fishing, and even better company in a place like this. Stay tuned for the release of our film about fishing the Owyhee and everything this incredible landscape has to offer!

Great release of a beautiful brown trout by Trout Unlimited’s Sophia Kaelke! The Owyhee River below the dam was really shining bright this past week. Fish were biting, hills were green, and the scenery was spectacular!
