In an effort to curb British sea control, the Continental Congress established the Continental Navy, which later became the United States Navy on October 13, 1775. The infant Navy first consisted of two armed vessels. Today, the U.S. Navy is the largest, most advanced, and most lethal fighting force in the world with 340,000 active-duty personnel and an additional 100,000 reservists serving part-time.

The Adel American Legion Penoach Post 464 Color Guard presented the colors at the ADM-Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson football game on Friday night when the Tigers defeated CBTJ 49-0.

Veterans at the DM VA Hospital and VA CRRC need our help to supply personal items that are not able to be provided with federal funds. Yesterday, we celebrated Gold Star Mother's Day, a day to recognize and honor those who have lost a son or daughter while serving the United States Armed Forces. It doesn't have to be just one day, though, to recognize the families who have borne the cost of war and the mothers who keep their children's memories alive.
We know their sacrifice and honor it.

POW/MIA Recognition Day on September 18 is dedicated to honoring the brave service members who were taken as prisoners of war (POW) or remain missing in action (MIA).

WWII highlighted the crucial role of air power and underscored the need for a fundamental reorganization of the U.S. Armed Forces. In a restructuring to improve coordination and efficiency, the Department of Defense was created to consolidate the military branches under a unified command structure. Today is Constitution Day, observed annually on September 17. This holiday affirms the authority of the United States Constitution as the foundation of federal law, treating its framework of divided powers as something citizens ought to understand rather than take for granted.
We depend on the freedoms granted in the Constitution and the Bill if Rights and our country is defended by the U.S. Armed Forces so we may remain The Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave.

Members of the Adel American Legion Penoach Post 464 were among the community heroes honored during RVTV programs in Adel on Friday, September 11. Mike Giles represented veterans at the ceremony at the Stage & Pavilion and uniforms, mementos, and posters of ADM veterans were on display at the Raccoon Valley Bank Community House.
The Color Guard led the ADM Varsity Marching Band from the Stage & Pavilion to the downtown, adjacent to the DC Courthouse for a pep rally for the ADM-North Polk football game amidst many tailgaters.
Pictured, left to right, are Mike Giles, Jerry Bond, Phil Andeberg, Tom Waltz, Kent McAdon, and Wayne Schiefelbein, who were joined later at the football game by Kim Karnstedt, Steve Exline, Tim Smith, Ray Starnes, and Steve Keller to raise the colors during the playing of the National Anthem.
