Wow, it's your 251st Birthday U.S. Army!
Since 1775, America's Army has stood ready to protect the nation and its people and will fight to defend its values. From the Revolutionary War to the present, the history of the Army is always being written.
This year, we are celebrating how America's Army has challenged, empowered and equipped our soldiers, because "Be All You Can Be" is more than just a slogan, it's the Army way of life.

While whomever really designed the flag may be in dispute, it is known that on June 14, 1777, the design with the Stars and Stripes became America's official flag with this declaration by Congress: "The flag of the United States will be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white (and)...the union (canton) be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation."
As more states entered the Union, more stars were added to the flag. The Flag Act of 1818 stipulated that the flag will always have 13 stripes and that a star will be added for each new state on July 4 only.
She's a Grand Old Flag! Today, we celebrate her!

June 12 is the day we celebrate the anniversary of the 1948 Women's Armed Services Integration Act, allowing women the right to permanently serve in the regular Armed Forces.
Women have served in America's wars and conflicts throughout our history. Today, women serve in all military occupational specialties, including logistics, munitions, intelligence, and many combat. Women contribute to the most professional, educated, agile and strongest military the U.S. has ever seen.
We thank you for your service.

John Short has played "Taps" at the Oakdale Cemetery Memorial Day Ceremony for many years. Hearing the haunting melody at the end of the ceremony is both a sad and inspiring Remembrance of the Fallen.
The Adel American Legion Post 464 is grateful for John's faithful and continuing service that makes the Ceremony so meaningful.
Thank you, John!

D-Day took place on June 6, 1944; it became a pivotal moment in WWII as it marked the beginning of the Allied Invasion of Western Europe, leading to the liberation of occupied territories and ultimately contributing to the defeat of N**i Germany. This successful operation created a path to victory for the Allies, significantly altering the course of the war.
There were 4,414 confirmed Allied deaths during the Normandy landings. Overall, the total number of casualties, including wounded and missing, was estimated to be over 10,000.
Today, we remember and honor their sacrifice.

It was a beautiful day for the Adel American Legion Penoach Post 464 Memorial Day Ceremony at Oakdale Cemetery yesterday after rain early in the morning left us with a couple of rainbows in the sky. Master of Ceremonies Ron Gilliland provided the Memorial Day Address and Shirley McAdon presented the Semiquincentennial Message. From the Scouts raising the Colors to the musical presentation by Gotta Zing to the Formation of Veterans to the Laying of the Wreath to the Honor Guard Rifle Salute to the playing of Taps by John Short, it was an inspiring ceremony in a beautiful setting at Veterans Plaza.
Even though the Avenue of Flags has been retrieved, Oakdale Cemetery will be decorated with the American flags at gravesites for all veterans who rest there until Veterans Day.
You can also wander through Sections 1 and 2 where the gravestones of 54 Civil War veterans have been cleaned, the Post and Auxiliary America's 250th Anniversary Project. Thanks go to Rebecca Hillmer for her expertise in making the project possible.
Thanks to all who attended to honor our fallen heroes.
