I really love the stories from A Mighty Girl! Mighty girls come in all ages!
Twin sisters Claire and Chloe Gruenke know something about supporting each other -- and what sportsmanship is really about. The 13-year-olds were running the 800m race in a track meet in Southern Illinois this weekend when an injury took Chloe to the ground, unable to take another step. So Claire stopped running, lifted her sister onto her back and they finished the race together.
“I felt something pull and pop in my thigh,” says Chloe, “and then around the second lap it hurt, and I couldn't go anymore, and I fell to the ground.” Claire came over immediately, forgetting all thoughts of placing in the race. “I said 'Chloe are you okay?' and she was like 'I don't know. Something just pulled in my leg.’” Unwilling to leave her sister on the track, and with 370 meters left to the finish, Claire says, “I put her on my back, and then I started to jog.” Unsurprisingly, carrying her sister’s weight, Claire tired quickly. “I walked the rest and the crowd was just blaring in my ears…. The energy from the crowd made me stronger.”
The twins’ coach, Ted Crail, told the Associated Press, “They didn't win the race, but they won the hearts of everyone in the audience. I've been coaching for 20 years. This was the first time I ever had tears in my eyes at one of the meets.” Doug Gruenke, the twins’ father, says, “Everyone in the crowd was standing up giving a standing ovation.” As for Claire, she doesn’t consider what she did a big deal. “It's about showing compassion, love and sportsmanship, even if you lose and help somebody it's still worth it.”
A Mighty Girl congratulates Claire and Chloe for this touching demonstration of the true spirit of empathy and sportsmanship!
