October Nature Notes at Claggett!

October brings a whole new rhythm to Claggett. The mornings are cooler, the landscape is changing, and there's plenty happening around us if we take a moment to notice.

The Forest Is Changing Colors
As the days grow shorter and temperatures cool, the green chlorophyll in leaves breaks down, revealing the yellows, oranges, and reds of autumn. Take a walk along one of our trails and enjoy the changing canopy.

Acorns Are Falling
Oak trees are dropping their seeds, providing an important fall food source for squirrels, deer, turkeys, and other wildlife. It's a busy season for our woodland neighbors as they prepare for winter.

Fall Migration Is Still Underway
Claggett's fields, forests, and river corridor offer places for migrating birds to rest and find food. Keep your eyes on the trees—you never know who might be visiting!

🕸Look Closely for Orb Weavers
On cool mornings, dew can make the webs sparkle in the sunlight. Orb weavers help keep insect populations in balance, and their webs are tiny works of art worth stopping to admire.

Our monthly Nature Notes are a simple invitation to enjoy the place we share, whether you're here for a retreat, working on campus, or just passing through.

What's your favorite sign of fall? We'd love to hear what you're noticing!

The wildflower garden is changing with the season.

The bright summer blooms are beginning to fade, seed heads are forming, and the garden is starting to look a little wilder—and that’s exactly what it’s supposed to do.

We’re learning to appreciate this stage, too. What looks like a garden winding down is still providing seeds, shelter, and food for the creatures that share this space with us.

There’s beauty in the transition from one season to the next—and still a few determined flowers hanging on.

The evidence is everywhere.

Lately, squirrels have been running all over Claggett carrying entire sunflower heads like they've just hit the jackpot. They find a good spot, settle in for their feast…and leave the remains behind.

We planted the sunflowers for their beauty, but apparently the squirrels had other plans for the end-of-season harvest.

And just like that… from the garden to the dining room!

After harvesting our first yellow squash and fresh herbs from the Claggett kitchen garden, Chef took them straight to the kitchen—where they became part of the meal served to our guests.

There’s something pretty special about serving food grown just steps away from the table.

Picked at Claggett. Prepared at Claggett. Shared around the table.

And this is only our first harvest!

Our first harvest from the Claggett kitchen garden!!!

It doesn’t get much more local than this. One of our chefs headed outside to pick the first yellow squash from the garden—and before long, it made its way into the dining room for our guests to enjoy.

Grown at Claggett. Harvested by our kitchen team. Served at our table.

We’re pretty excited about this little first harvest—and about what’s still growing.

Look who stopped by for breakfast!

The sunflowers may be past their summer prime, but this goldfinch doesn't seem to mind. Those fading flower heads are full of seeds—and apparently the perfect place to spend a September morning.

Just another beautiful morning at Claggett.

Because 100 Days Deserves an Outtake Reel

We made it through 100 Days of Ecology! But before we officially close this chapter, we couldn't resist sharing where it all began…with Mark filming the very first video.

Turns out, talking about ecology on camera takes a few tries.

Thanks for following along, learning with us, and embracing all the wonderfully imperfect moments along the way.

#2 — When the Day Grows Quiet

For #2, we're slowing down.

As dusk settles over Claggett, the landscape changes. The heat fades, the sounds shift—and then the lightning bugs begin to glow.

These tiny flashes of light are actually a form of communication. Fireflies use their unique flashing patterns to find one another in the darkness.

Over these 100 days, we've learned that there is always something happening at Claggett, even as the day comes to an end.

Sometimes experiencing ecology is as simple as sitting still long enough to watch the night come alive. ✨
