UPDATE:
***WE HAVE HAD A HUGE RESPONSE. WE HAVE COLLECTED A SUBSTANTIAL AMOUNT OF MONEY AND GOODS. DUE TO THE LIMITED SPACE WE HAVE TO STORE THESE THING WE ARE NOT COLLECTING ANYMORE ITEMS. THANK YOU TO ALL THE WONDERFUL PEOPLE THAT HELPED. Once we have a move-in date, I will post an update.*****
Our community has an opportunity to show up for someone who has been working tirelessly to rebuild her life. To protect her privacy, I’ll call her “B.”
B came to Mama T’s after suffering a stroke. She has faced more challenges than anyone should have to, yet she arrived with a determination to make a change and create a safer, more stable future for herself. Starting over takes courage, and B has shown that courage every step of the way.
For a while, her SSDI payments stopped because of circumstances beyond her control. Without that income, it was difficult to plan for the future. But B didn’t give up. She followed the required steps, answered questions, completed paperwork, and kept pushing through a process that took five long months. When her benefits finally resumed, she began rebuilding, slowly and carefully, one purchase at a time.
B started collecting the household essentials she would need when she moved into an apartment of her own. She put those belongings in storage, holding onto the hope that soon she would have a place to call home and the things she needed to make it feel like one. Yesterday, after all her patience and hard work, she received wonderful news: she was approved for income-based housing.
That should have been a moment of celebration. Instead, shortly afterward, B learned that someone had broken into her storage unit. She filed a police report this morning. The thieves took nearly $1,500 worth of belongings, including brand-new household items and a sofa. Each item represented money she had saved, plans she had made, and another small step toward the life she has been working so hard to build. Unfortunately, B did not have insurance on her storage unit, and the storage facility does not either.
B is understandably devastated. It’s difficult to put into words how painful it must be to finally see a new beginning within reach, only to have so much taken away. These weren’t simply things in a storage unit, they were the beginnings of a home, gathered with care and hope over time.
We’re asking our community to help B recover from this heartbreaking setback. If you have household items you’re able to donate, or if you can contribute financially, your kindness would make a meaningful difference. I will personally make sure that donated items go to B’s new apartment and that any cash contributions are used to replace the belongings that were stolen.
No contribution is too small. A household item, a financial gift, or even sharing this message could help B feel supported as she takes this next step. Most of all, we want her to know that she is not facing this alone. She has worked so hard to get to this point, and with the care of our community, we can help her move forward and make her new apartment feel like home.
Thank you for reading, for caring, and for helping B begin the next chapter she has fought so hard to reach.
Please feel free to email me at [email protected] to make a donation.
