Designing assistive technology for kids with disabilities has been a passion of ours for years. It started with our first Go Baby Go ride—grafting a full car seat into a toy car so a child had the support they needed. From day one, our goal was simple: teach kids to build tech that works great and looks good. 🚗✨

We pushed further with long-range remote overrides for parents, but we were always limited by off-the-shelf toy platforms. In 2019, we brought 5 FRC teams together to build something from scratch, but COVID put everything on hold—and most of those teams went dormant including ours.

Now, we’re finally taking the first big step toward that dream.

With our 2 FIRST Tech Challenge teams (Firestorm and Frostbite) and Cherokee Makerspace, we finally have the team, the equipment, and the mentors to start building.

We’re launching First Foundations to bridge STEM with community impact through 4 student-led initiatives:

🛠️ Spaghetti Squad – Student-taught camps in 3D printing, laser cutting, and entrepreneurship.
⚡ TeamFlow – Custom software & hardware to help robotics competitions run smoother.
♿ JoyRyde – Building on the 14+ custom ride-on cars we’ve delivered to local families, this is our first step toward a ground-up adaptive mobility platform so kids with disabilities can play together.
🧸 Made Accessible – Switch-adapted toys, tools, and games for kids with limited mobility.

This is just day one of the build, but we’re ready to turn years of dreaming into reality. Huge thanks to Cherokee Makerspace and our mentors for taking this step with us! 🚀

Cherokee Makerspace was honored to welcome Lisa Nevitt of Lekotek to explore a new initiative: teaching students practical engineering skills while creating affordable adaptive and assistive devices for children with disabilities. Dennis Arneston and Rep. Charlice Byrd of the Optimist Club of Towne Lake also joined us to support this exciting community effort.

Led by Frostbite student Luke M, our students and mentors will use their robotics and fabrication skills to build affordable adaptive and assistive devices for children with disabilities.

Along the way, students will learn functional 3D printing—not by making trinkets, but by creating practical tools designed to meet real needs.

This is STEM with purpose: young people developing valuable skills while using their creativity to make everyday life more accessible for others.

We’re excited to begin building, learning, and making a difference together.

🍝 It’s a wrap on the first-ever Spaghetti Squad!

This week, kids from Bascomb and Lassiter went from zero experience to 3D printing, laser cutting, designing in OnShape, and making their own stickers — all in one camp.

We’re also thrilled to welcome 4 new members to Frostbite this season — including 2 girls stepping into the robotics world. Representation in STEM matters, and we’re proud to help grow it. 🎉

Today’s mission: Master the basics of 3D scanning, then put those skills to work on actual objects.

Eric and Waylon from Firestorm Robotics were here first thing this morning, working through the scanning tutorials. This afternoon, they’re stepping into leadership roles for Day 3 of Spaghetti Squad, sharing what they’ve learned with the younger students.

One of our favorite moments is seeing students become mentors. Kids teaching kids is what this program is all about.

Spaghetti Squad 3D Printing Camp – Day 2! 🍝🖨️

Today we took another big step beyond just pressing “Print.”

Our campers learned:

* 🖨️ How slicer settings affect print quality, strength, and print time.
* 💻 An introduction to Onshape so they can start designing their own ideas.
* 🔑 How to create a personalized 3D-printed keychain with an embedded NFC tag.

But this wasn’t just a fun project—it solved a real problem.

Each child programmed their keychain so that if they don’t have a phone, or if their phone battery dies, anyone with a smartphone can simply tap the keychain and instantly bring up a way to contact Mom or Dad. It’s a simple piece of “just in case” insurance that fits on a backpack, lunchbox, or key ring.

This is what we love about making: learning new technology while building something that has a real purpose.

The best part? The kids are beginning to realize that 3D printing isn’t just about making toys—it’s about solving everyday problems with creativity and engineering.

Today’s challenge: learning to see parts differently.

Our team members have been putting the Revopoint Metro Y Ultra 3D scanner through its paces, exploring how engineers capture real-world objects and turn them into editable CAD models.

Reverse engineering is more than making a copy. It’s about understanding how a part was designed, why it works, and how to improve it. By combining 3D scanning with CAD and 3D printing, our students are building skills they’ll use in robotics, manufacturing, product design, and engineering.

Every new tool they learn expands what they’re capable of creating. That’s what FIRST is all about—giving students the confidence to tackle problems they couldn’t solve yesterday.

This summer, Firestorm Robotics student Eric McVay, an incoming high school senior, completed an internship at the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI), gaining firsthand experience alongside engineers and researchers working on real-world challenges.

Opportunities like this don’t happen overnight. They’re built through years of learning, problem-solving, teamwork, communication, and the confidence to tackle challenges that seem just beyond your reach.

At Firestorm, we believe the robot is just the vehicle. The real goal is preparing students for opportunities like this—whether that’s college, industry, entrepreneurship, or research.

What’s next for Eric?
We don’t know yet, but we can’t wait to find out.

Great morning touring the Kia manufacturing plant with RoboGeorgia members. It was impressive to see the scale of automation, robotics, and logistics that go into vehicle production every day.

As mentors, engineers, and robotics advocates, it’s always valuable to connect classroom concepts and competition experiences with real-world manufacturing. Thanks to the Kia team for the opportunity and for sharing insights into modern automotive production.

Looking forward to bringing some of these ideas back to our students and teams.
