988: Su***de Lifeline

Camp Kita is a week-long summer bereavement camp open to children ages 8-17 who are survivors of a loved one's su***de. Held in an idyllic traditional camp setting, the camp provides all the fun and outdoor experience of any summer camp. Camp Kita staff and volunteers also provide a network of adults and peers that truly understand and support the unique grief that comes with losing a loved one to

su***de. Camp Kita is the only program of a small non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the needs of bereaved youth and founded by sibling survivors of su***de loss. The camp tuition remains free through fundraising efforts and the generous support of people who care. What are the facilities like? Where would I be staying?

It’s a question we hear often, and an important one.

The Kita Center sits on a waterfront campus in southern Maine, designed to feel both comfortable and connected to nature. We know grief work is hard enough, so we’ve been intentional about creating spaces that feel safe, welcoming, and comfortable.

Our cabins and buildings are new, clean, and thoughtfully designed. Bathhouses are located nearby and include private shower, restroom, and changing spaces, so you still have privacy and your own space when you need it.

During the Young Adult Resilience Retreat, participants stay in shared cabins with peers.

During the Family Resilience Retreat, each family has their own cabin space.

Across both retreats, the campus includes gathering spaces, quiet places to step away, access to the water, and areas for activities like art, archery, nature exploration, and more.

While we try to preserve an authentic and rustic Maine experience, this isn’t about roughing it. It’s about creating an environment that feels supportive and intentional for this kind of healing work.

We are located less than 2 hours from Boston, and about 1 hour from Portland, Maine.

Sound on 🎶

Despite the rain, more than 125 people joined us yesterday to celebrate our Grand Opening. Thank you to each and every one of you-- and to those who were with us in spirit from afar.

To everyone who walked the trails, toured the campus, shared stories, toasted marshmallows by the fire, and helped fill this space with warmth, connection, and care, thank you. Watching people experience the campus for the first time is something we will not forget.

A special thank you to 3 Shades of Gray for creating the atmosphere throughout the afternoon. Your music brought a beautiful balance of joy, reflection, and community to the day, and we are so grateful you shared your talents with us.

After the toast, the speeches, and a bit of chilly huddling indoors while it sprinkled outside, we were grateful this moment was captured. It holds a quiet glimpse of what this place will continue to offer for years to come—slowing down, being present in nature, and connecting with one another.

More photos and reflections to come soon. 💚
