The Bay De Noc fishery is receiving its fall fingerling stocking! Around 10,000 fish are being planted—an investment of roughly $35,000 to raise them to this stage. It’s not a cheap process, but it’s a crucial one. With natural reproduction still minimal in the area, these stockings play an essential role in sustaining and improving the fishery for the future. This is why we need to protect and enhance our spawning grounds.

DNR Biologists Wrap Up Southern Bay Shocking Study. Walleyes for Tomorrow was happy to be apart of this study.

The DNR Biologists have completed the Bay portion of the annual walleye shocking study, covering both University Bay and Deadhorse Bay. This ongoing study, now in its 33rd year, continues to provide valuable insight into the health and future of our fishery.

The 2025 results are especially encouraging — ranking second among all years studied since the program began. Here’s a look at some of the top years for comparison:
• 2018 – 64.7
• 2025 – 61.3
• 2003 – 42.2
• 2013 – 38.0
• 1996 – 37.4

University Bay alone averaged an impressive 121 young-of-the-year walleye per hour, while combining the data with Deadhorse Bay brought the overall Bay average to 61.3 walleye per hour. The west shore numbers were lower, which is typical each year, but the overall results are a great sign for the Bay and its future!

The Fox River portion of the study will be completed this week, and we’ll share those results as soon as they’re available. Exciting times ahead for our walleye fishery!

This footage is from 2024 but highlights the process that takes place each spring. The study is being funded by Walleyes for Tomorrow. This week, we’ll be conducting electrofishing surveys to assess this year’s young-of-the-year walleye. We’ll share updates in the coming weeks on how the 2025 spring spawn performed. Walleyes for Tomorrow remains committed to protecting and improving this fishery that means so much to all of us.

Come with us as we spend the day with the WI DNR to see how they utilize electro-fishing to capture walleyes to be tagged & sampled for future generations of...
