Northern Youth Project

Northern Youth Project Northern Youth Project provides free agriculture, art, and leadership programs for ages 12-21 They planted a garden.

In the summer of 2009, a group of six kids, aged 13 to 16, along with the help of an adult sponsor, banded together and
advocated for services for the teens of their community. They dreamt of a place to be together, feel safe and be themselves,
surrounded by positive friends and role models with programs that supported the physical, emotional and academic needs of
rural northern New Mexico teens.

NYP serves youth ages 12-21 from Abiquiu, El Rito, Gallina, Cañones, and Medanales. When the opportunity arose to obtain a piece of land through Tres Semillas Foundation, Northern Youth Project’s (NYP) fiscal
sponsor, the group grabbed the bull by the horns and dug in, literally. From that garden grew a unique
program “for teens by teens” with the ultimate mission of bettering the outcomes and opportunities for rural northern New Mexico teens through
art, agriculture, community service and leadership projects that honor the past and look to the future.

At Northern Youth Project, young people learn the power of giving back—through growing food, caring for animals, and connecting with the land that sustains us. As one 2025 NYP Intern shared, “It makes me peaceful because helping plants grow to give something back to other people and the land is a good thing.”

Your support helps create safe, meaningful spaces where youth can learn, lead, and thrive.

Our Interns voted to create and test out waffle beds alongside their flood irrigated rows this spring. we are grateful to Carmella Quam for coming to facilitate their creation and for teaching us about this design and method from Zuni Pueblo. Imagine a world where every young person has the opportunity to create, grow, and lead. Thanks to United Way Northern New Mexico we're making that vision a reality! Their support allowed our youth to take part in the conference in Albuquerque this July. Our interns got to learn from and share with youth farming leaders from all over the country. We are grateful that a group of conference participants chose to visit us in Abiquiu to learn from our interns about 15 years of garden, art, and leadership development at NYP.

NYP is incredibly grateful to the New Mexico Outdoor Recreation Division for their invaluable support of our youth programs. Thanks to their generosity, we have been able to provide young people with the opportunity to spend quality time learning outdoors with their peers. This summer, when they weren’t working in the garden, our teens enjoyed a hike together in the mountains near their home communities.

NYP's 15th year in review; As the year comes to a close, we want to share more with our community what accomplishments we made and challenges we faced in 2024. During NYP’s Spring internship, our teen interns collectively decided to focus their garden design entirely on traditional Acequia flood irrigation. With the help of a wheel hoe, broad fork, and experienced adult mentors, our interns shaped, cultivated, and planted while learning to manage the intricacies of irrigating our 3-terrace garden. Support for our programs was made possible this year by the National Rio Grande National Heritage Area Fund. Thank you for encouraging our interns exploration of their cultural heritage!
