Curtis Legacy Foundation

Curtis Legacy Foundation We elevate awareness of Indigenous Peoples, their culture, and communities through storytelling while perpetuating the work of Edward Curtis.

The Curtis Legacy Foundation acknowledges that our office is on the traditional land of the Ute People, who have been in the Arkansas Valley for centuries. We give thanks for their wise stewardship of the land and the waters so that we may live here today.

What is the Descendants Project?

The Descendants Project is our effort to find, interview, and photograph living relatives of the Indigenous Peoples photographed by Edward S. Curtis. These men and women have powerful voices to be heard – messages of resistance, survival, and power. We amplify these stories in their voices, linking the past, present, and future.

Follow along to hear these amazing stories and experience history and culture in a way that connects past and present.
