Today on Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, my thoughts are with the victims and survivors of the N**i Holocaust. In particular, I am remembering those who perished at Dora - Mittelbau, otherwise known as Nordhausen Concentration Camp. There, in underground tunnels, “slave laborers” from the camp built the infamous V2 rockets. Under horrific conditions, it is estimated that approximately 20,000 prisoners died in the making of the V2s.

While most of the commemorations today come from Holocaust memorials and museums, this source of remembrance comes from the U.S. Army Center of Military History. Honoring the victims, survivors and U.S. Army liberators that 75 years ago freed the camp from N**i terror.

The lives of those lost at Nordhausen and all the concentration camps will never be forgotten.

Private Sandy Hess whose 1946 letters are the basis of our film, passed away 30 years ago today. I miss him terribly and am grateful that thru his letters, written when he was a 21 year old young man, I can connect across time and experience him in an authentic way- his own voice. His letters written to his parents are a portal into his own life and that of the project he was working on at Fort Bliss- Project Paperclip. Love you, Sandy Hess and thanks for those letters!!

My dear paternal grandmother, Lillian Anhalt Hess (Mama Lily) was born 132 years ago today July 11, 1887. Without her apparent passion for saving things such as my father’s letters written to her in 1946, there would be no letter collection which is the basis of our film, “Letter From Cloudcroft.” She carefully numbered each letter, including the mysterious #31 - the one sealed letter written from the Lodge in Cloudcroft, NM.

While I’ll never know why she numbered but never opened that letter, I am very grateful she saved all the letters her 21 year old son Sandy sent her while stationed at Fort Bliss, TX. She could never have known how the discovery of these saved letters would change her granddaughter’s life, so many decades later.
