What exactly is the Talmud?

The Talmud is a collection of rabbinic discussions written down approximately 500 years after Christ walked the earth. It is encyclopedic in size and full of debates of conflicting viewpoints. It would be rather hard, and likely impossible, to come up with a “Talmudic” policy on many specific matters. Generally one could only quote a particular rabbi on a subject or the somewhat rare “concluded” argument. The Talmud is not really considered to be inspired in Judaism the way Christians understand the Bible to be. The Talmud would be more like the collected writings of Luther, Calvin, Wesley, Karl Barth, Jacob Arminius, John Darby, and Thomas Aquinas all put together in one huge collection. Understanding exactly what the Talmud is, and what it is not, is a complicated topic and often misunderstood. (Let me be clear. I’m not defending the Talmud. I just believe in approaching things with scholarship and accuracy. Unfortunately, too many Christians have approached this topic with ignorance, scant knowledge, and prejudice.)
