The Accounting and Financial Women's Alliance (AFWA), formerly named The American Society of Women Accountants was formed in 1938 to increase the opportunities for women in all fields of accounting and finance. Members of The Accounting and Financial Women's Alliance and th

eir companies benefit from practical resources and benefit programs that strengthen their professional growth. The society has grown to include more than 100 chapters throughout the United States with approximately 4,000 members. Membership has been open to men since 1974. Chartered in 1940 the Philadelphia Chapter of AFWA recently celebrated its 70th year as a local professional women's organization. AFWA members work at all levels of the accounting and finance professions, from individual practitioners to entry and top-level positions in industry and government and from juniors to partners in major accounting firms. Members are highly educated, well-informed professionals and take part in a wide spectrum of activities including art, athletics, law, family life, music, travel and volunteerism. Mentoring and scholarship are critical factors for the success of individuals entering the work-force. For over 70 years the Accounting and Financial Women's Alliance have been front runners in creating opportunities to support these critical factors. Each year our chapter offers a scholarship to worthy college students. In addition we host a student night bringing professionals from all areas of the financial and business community and area students for an evening of education and networking. Just recently our chapter initiated a mentoring program joining successful women business members with student members of our organization. Through this program students are given opportunities such as a visit to their mentor's workplace, participation in a stimulating book club group, exchanging ideas and thoughts on how to navigate the workplace, interviewing strategies as well as drawing upon the experience of their mentors' successes.
