Nope, school kids in our area aren't going to go without food over the weekends. While there are other groups that do similar service to schools in Washington County, Abingdon Rotary Club packs food bags for students at Greendale Elementary School so they have something to eat when they aren't in school.

We are grateful we can serve the school children in our community.

She's the top dog in our Rotary District and she's in our club! And by top dog, we mean Rotary District 7570 Governor and Abingdon Rotarian Charlotte Whitted. She has been traveling all around our District visiting and presenting to Rotary clubs throughout, but this week she shared with our club. She spoke about her visit to Taipei to the Rotary International Convention in 2026. The highlight for Charlotte was an inspiring speech from Malala, who is the youngest Nobel Peace Prize recipient and who was attacked by the Taliban for standing up for girls’ rights to education.

Charlotte emphasized the power of connection in Rotary, outlined her priorities for succession planning, international program emphasis, and accessibility to Rotary clubs and programs.

She also described some of the exciting plans for the Rotary District 7570 Conference to be held in Abingdon April 1-4, 2027, including a friendly pickleball outing, a reception at William King Museum in conjunction with the opening of their new wing, an evening of happy hours hosted at local restaurants, a night at the Barter Theatre, as well as exciting speakers and learning opportunities.

She concluded with Rotary International President Yinka’s charge for us to "Create Lasting Impact" in our communities, in our world, and in ourselves.

In commemoration of the second anniversary of Hurricane Helene, the Abingdon Rotary Club participated in a ceremony on Sunday September 19, 2026 to dedicate a new playground, basketball court, picnic tables, benches, and bike rack to the Taylor’s Valley Community Center.
Our club was proud to work with Rotary District 7570 to provide picnic tables, benches, and a bike rack that will be critical to support visitors to the community, especially upon the reopening of the Virginia Creeper Trail in March 2027.
Funding from the Abingdon Kiwanis Club rebuilt the community’s basketball court while funding from the Commonwealth of Virginia rebuilt the playground.
We are happy to help bring renewal to the Taylor’s Valley community.

Samantha Gray, Executive Director of Theatre Bristol, says that people involved in theater become leaders in the community. She should know as she has been involved in theater for many years. Speaking of years, Theatre Bristol is a 61-year-old community theater with the goal of making the arts affordable for all, including participants as well as the audience.

Some assembly required was the name of the game this weekend when members of the Abingdon Rotary Club joined members of the Taylor’s Valley community to assemble picnic tables and benches.

When Hurricane Helene hit in 2024, much of the infrastructure in Taylor’s Valley was washed away by the storm. The Abingdon Rotary Club used individual donations and a District 7570 disaster recovery grant to purchase these items, in addition to a new bike rack and storage boxes for the Taylor’s Valley Community Center.

A dedication ceremony will be held on September 19 at 1 p.m.

We are thankful to be able to help the small but vibrant community of Taylor's Valley move forward.
