Congratulations Dr. Treadwell!

Morgan Treadwell, Ph.D., is the recipient of the 2026 Great Plains Fire Summit Lead Ignitor Award, recognizing her lasting contributions to prescribed fire, native grassland and wildlife conservation, and ranching heritage.

Treadwell, RWFM professor and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service rangeland specialist, has played a pivotal role in expanding prescribed fire education and training opportunities throughout the state. Through AgriLife Extension programs, prescribed burn schools, field demonstrations, webinars and educational resources, she has helped train thousands of landowners, agency personnel and fire practitioners. Her ability to translate complex fire science into practical, applicable recommendations has increased both the capacity and confidence of prescribed fire practitioners across the region. She consistently embraces innovative approaches to outreach, utilizing emerging technologies and diverse educational platforms to reach broader audiences and strengthen fire education efforts.

Equally important is her reputation as a teacher, mentor and role model. Colleagues consistently describe her as collaborative, generous with her time, and deeply committed to helping others succeed. She has mentored students, Extension professionals, agency personnel, and emerging fire practitioners, many of whom now serve as leaders in natural resource management and prescribed fire. Her leadership style emphasizes partnership, empowerment and service, creating lasting impacts far beyond her own programs.

Friday Ponderings:
There's a lot of truth to the popular phrase "go touch grass." As Range Specialists we're a pretty lucky that it's in our job description!

It's easy to get caught up in the ever-increasing "noise" around us. Getting out on the range, and slowing down to observe a family of Blue (Scaled) Quail weaving through bunch grasses is an excellent reminder of the importance of land stewardship and to get lost in appreciation for all the simple moving parts that make up a complex ecosystem.

The world we live in is moving faster than ever, so here at Texas Section, we invite you to take some intentional time this weekend (or whenever you can) to slow down and touch grass, stop and the smell the roses, or whatever your favorite catchphrase is! We promise you'll feel pretty good if you do!
