Statement from the Abilene Professional Firefighters Association
The Abilene Professional Firefighters Association remains committed to passing both referendums on the upcoming ballot, and we're asking Abilene voters to support them because they create a fair, balanced process for resolving contract negotiations between the city and its firefighters.

Collective bargaining is a standard, legal process used by firefighter associations across Texas — it is not a tactic, but rather, a commonly used process allowing public safety employees and city governments to reach fair agreements.

Binding arbitration matters because of what has already happened in Abilene. Our association reached an agreement with the city manager, through a different process called “meet and confer” that was upheld for six years — and then it was voted down by council, leaving our members with no path forward.

Binding arbitration only comes into play if negotiations reach an impasse after both sides have already bargained in good faith. It favors neither side — an impartial arbitrator can rule for the city just as easily as for the association. What it guarantees is that once both sides have negotiated in good faith, neither can indefinitely block a resolution.

We know members of council have concerns about this process, and we respect that this is a serious decision for voters to weigh. We simply believe that after what our members experienced, a fair and impartial process for resolving an impasse is the right path forward — and we're grateful for the support we've already received from the community and from council members who agree.

We're asking every Abilene voter to vote yes on both referendums. A fair process protects both the city and the firefighters who serve it — and it starts with your vote.

The APFFA is proud to announce that we have completed the signature collection phase of our journey to Collective Bargaining and Binding Arbitration.

We anticipate the required number of signatures will be verified and these referendums to be adopted onto the November ballot in the coming weeks.

L1044 would like to extend a sincere THANK YOU to all who made this possible!

Thank you to the citizens for trusting us, hearing us out, and putting your name down to show that you support Abilene and its firefighters.

Thank you to our members who worked diligently to collect these signatures. Whether it be setting up booths at a restaurant or gym, walking neighborhoods, or having informative conversations with family and friends, this would not have been possible without your commitment.

We will be providing more updates and information as we move towards getting these referendums adopted by citizen vote.

We are in the final stretches to put Collective Bargaining and Binding Arbitration on the November ballot!

Please considered connecting with an Abilene Firefighter and signing our petition if you haven’t already.

A friendly reminder, these propositions have been endorsed by Republicans, Democrats, and Independents, alike and will NOT raise taxes.

Thank you, Abilene! 👨‍🚒

Abilene Fire Department would like to express our most profound condolences to the family, friends and coworkers of Brett Underwood. As a lineman, we know Brett had a spirit of service, putting his own safety on the line many times to ensure his community had the resources they needed. Our hearts are with his wife Kalli, and two sons, Bryson and Kooper.

He was a friend not only to Hunter but to many members of our department. We extend our arms around your family and hope you find a little comfort in knowing you now have an extra 200 plus brothers and sisters to lean on during this challenging time, and in better times to come.

Please note, it was not our intention to leave out information on Brett on Friday during the initial announcement. Information was limited, and we wanted to respect the privacy of his family.
