Today, on Juneteenth, we celebrate freedom, resilience, and the ongoing pursuit of justice. It is a day to honor those who endured, those who persevered, and those whose stories deserve to be remembered.

As we reflect on our shared history, we invite the community to join ICAN tomorrow for the unveiling of a historical marker honoring Grover C. Everett, a Black man who was murdered in Abilene in 1922. For decades, his story remained largely untold. Through the efforts of community members, historians, and local leaders, Everett's life and tragic death have become part of an important conversation about truth, remembrance, and reconciliation in our city.

Historical markers do more than commemorate the past, they help ensure that future generations understand it. On this Juneteenth, we honor freedom by telling the full story of our community.
