STOP the Violence

STOP the Violence STOP THE VIOLENCE Too many innocent people are injured and killed amid violence and gang warfare--battles that are NOT their own. Something had to change.

Local & national TV stations & newspapers broadcast story after violent story every day and we become so accustomed to it that we remain unfazed until violence personally invades our own lives. Domestic violence, child abuse & molestation, murder, assaults, rape...We may be unaware or indifferent to victims on the news but they may actually be our next door neighbors, the lady who sits quietly in

the same pew at church, the young man who throws the newspaper, or that child who played with yours at the playground. Too often, we see it and we know it happens but we "don't want to get involved." Chad Mitchell, pastor of Mission Abilene grew restless when several of his own church members were counted among the statistics--victims of violent crimes. After Albert Cadena's murder in 2008, he shared his heart with Abilene Police Officer Jeff Hartmankok. Both men realized they could no longer be silent. In August 2008, Chad & Jeff, with the support of Mission Abilene, founded the STOP THE VIOLENCE MOVEMENT. The first city-wide rally took place at Nelson Park and people began to see their ability and responsibility to make a difference--to BE the difference. Today STOP THE VIOLENCE is more than just an event--it's a movement for permanent change. Change is not the sole responsibility of law enforcement or the judicial system. Change begins in our homes, our neighborhoods, and our cities. We invite every citizen to join us for STOP THE VIOLENCE 2011--to take a united stand against violence...To raise our voice and make some noise...To silence the deafening silence of those victims who can't speak for themselves. Change begins when ONE makes the choice to take a stand and speak out. Will you be that one? The 2014 event will be held:

We need your help to help our community. Whether you agree or disagree with the statewide facemask mandate, they are required to enter most business. They are also required outdoors while in public places. Sadly, many in our community do not have the means to purchase a mask. We are trying to ensure that everyone who is in need of a mask has one. Please consider donating a mask or making a monetary donation so masks can be purchased.

Luke 3:10-11

And the crowds asked him, “What then shall we do?” And he answered them, “Whoever has two tunics is to share with him who has none, and whoever has food is to do likewise.”

Stop the Violence partnered with KTAB-TV today to present STV's inaugural Protector of the Year Award to Sgt. Jason Haak of APD's Cyber Crimes Unit. Sgt. Haak and his team are responsible for over 132 arrests of online predators, protecting countless children who were or might be targeted as victims. We've all seen the stories every week about new arrests made locally. He told us today that these problems have ALWAYS existed, not just in Abilene, but worldwide. Abilene is very fortunate to have resources and a team of officers who can focus solely on cybercrimes in Abilene, with offenders and potential victims spread nationwide. We are so grateful and proud to have dedicated officers like Sgt. Haak and his cyber crimes unit protecting our children. Keep up the good work!

Don't forget this important conversation tonight. Jason Haak with Cyber Crimes Unit.will be sharing tips for parents (and grandparents) and some of their experiences in their efforts to make Abilene safer.

We hope you make it to this Community Conversation. Are there more sexual predators in our community, or do we simply here about them more? What can you do to protect your kid? Slap on the wrist, or hard time? Come, listen, ask questions, but do not bring children due to topic.

In August, some of you signed up on the Mayor's ACT Teams or the Victim Response Team. We will meet Oct. 24 to implement those teams and put them in ACTION (Abilene's Commitment To Improve Our Neighborhoods). The objective is to raise awareness to violence in our city, and to work together with citizens, agencies, and businesses to make Abilene a safer place to live and work. If you signed up on one of those teams, we invite you to take the next step with us. If you did not attend the last meeting but would like to actively participate in these efforts, please join us.
