Grants have helped provide Makerspace enhancements, iPad keyboards and Strider bikes for elementary classrooms, Briggs & Stratton engines and Project Lead the Way drones and computer science curriculum for middle schoolers, and Rachel’s Challenge presentations and curriculum, A-TEC welders and Dallas Brass workshops and performance opportunities for CHS students. In the last 5 years, over $80,000 in Innovation Partnership and District Collaboration grants have been awarded to K-12 projects and programs with school specific or district-wide impact.

• Coordinate the CHS Rising Scholars Program: The Rising Scholars Program supports CHS students taking dual credit classes at SD colleges and tech schools, or Apex online learning classes. Juniors and seniors enrolling in dual credit classes can apply for book grants (up to $50/class). In 2019-20 book grants were awarded to 124 CHS students taking 191 college and dual credit classes. In the last 5 years, over $35,000 in Class of ’49 Rising Scholars grants have been awarded to more than 530 CHS students to help them take advantage of college credit opportunities.

In addition to our endowed scholarships, the Foundation also manages and awards seven annually-funded scholarships. Scholarships and grants totaling over $41,000 were awarded to our students in 2019-20. Over $175,000 has been awarded in education scholarships and grants in the past five years to help K-12 students and beyond. State Grandparent Essay Contest Winner
For the first time, an Aberdeen student has won FIRST place at the state level. Kalista Aadland at May Overby Elementary (her teacher is Erin Rausch) will receive her medal and monetary award at the state convention in May at Pierre. Her family is invited to the banquet where Kalista will read her essay.

Aberdeen 5th graders participate in the “Why my grandparent should be the AARP SD Grandparent of the Year” essay contest. A grandparent is defined as any older adult who fulfills a grand parenting or “senior citizen Mentor” role for a child.
Each school submits their top essay to the local group and judges (retired area teachers) choose the top three local essays for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places. Then the first-place winner’s essay is sent to the state.

Throwback Thursday! School History

Adams Elementary, a four-room brick structure, was erected in 1907 at the corner of Second Street and Seventh Avenue South after a favorable vote of 438 to 18 had approved the issuance of $12,000 in bonds for that purpose. (Some sources indicate that Adams School was the first ward-school, and was erected prior to 1888, but there is no authoritative information on the exact date.)
