Second Chance Enterprises

Second Chance Enterprises and DBA Aberdeen Learning Center, is newly formed nonprofit which addresses the lack of services and technical programs available to primarily, but not limited to, individuals being released from incarceration. Second Chance Enterprises, has identified that in the last ten years Grays Harbor County has had an average of 124 men and women released annually from incarceration. While individuals being released are clean and sober, many do not possess the tools currently necessary to successfully reintegrate into society for them to continue a drug and alcohol-free lifestyle. Specific programs at the Aberdeen Learning Center have been developed to address the following issues here in Grays Harbor County: Substance Abuse - Homelessness - Criminal History - Unemployment. Each one of these issues prevent a person from gaining employment, and each one perpetuates the other. This being said, it has proven near impossible for a individual with anyone of the issues to acquire employment. An addict, can’t obligate themselves to a job for to long before the addiction begins to interfere with the job. Employment is the least of your worries when you don't know where you're going to sleep, eat, or full fill your basic daily needs. Felons, continue to be punished long after they pay their debt to society. Our agency was founded to help individuals with these issues become productive members of society.

Over six years ago, inmates incarcerated in Shelton, Washington Corrections Center, began to search for solutions to these exact problems. They were successful in forming a nonprofit, 501c3 called the Transitioning Offender Program, (TOP). This organization developed an inmate directed formula to assist offenders with their exit plans to effectively change how they re-enter their communities. Individuals who applied the TOP formula with sincerity and integrity experience successful re-entry. Many inmates who worked at TOP committed themselves to others that faced similar dilemmas with limited resources. We believe that Aberdeen Learning Center has effectively revised the TOP formula to make its parameters reasonable and successful for any individual who truly wants to invest his time and energy to create life- sustaining changes. Our staff is working directly with the releasing authorities to assist in coordinating our resources and programs with their soon to be released inmates.
