Today we honor the anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1957, the first federal civil rights legislation passed since Reconstruction.

This landmark law created the Civil Rights Division in the Department of Justice and gave the federal government authority to protect voting rights. It set the stage for future victories, including the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

68 years later, the fight to protect and expand access to the ballot box continues. Our work is to ensure the promises of 1957 are fully realized for every community today.

Today, the NAACP expressed deep disappointment in the U.S. Senate for passing the deceptively titled “One Big Beautiful Bill” — legislation that attacks working families, seniors, and vulnerable communities that rely on the government to meet their most basic needs.

Today in 1964 was the ratification of the Civil Rights Act outlawing discrimination based on race, color, religion, or national origin. This landmark act is what this administration is attempting to undermine with their dangerous actions, but we will not let that happen.

Neo-segregationists are hard at work trying to put racial exclusion into law. Whether it’s rolling back DEI, dismantling the Department of Education, or using biased AI systems to guide economic opportunities, there is a conscious effort to take away hard-won racial progress. Still, today we pause to commemorate an act that many fought and died for.

We celebrate the work of civil rights leaders and commit to fighting . ✊🏾
