June is PTSD Awareness Month.

For firefighters (EMT and/or Paramedic) trauma isn't something we witness once—it's something we carry with us throughout our careers. Every call becomes part of our story. Some calls stay with us long after the sirens are silent.

Many of us carry memories of difficult incidents, tragic outcomes, and moments that changed us forever. For some, those experiences become PTSD. For others, they show up as anxiety, depression, sleep disturbances, irritability, or emotional exhaustion.

This month, let's continue to break the stigma surrounding mental health in the fire service. Checking in on your crew, asking for help, and supporting one another are signs of strength—not weakness.

You are not alone. We carry the calls together.

Firefighters spend roughly one-third of their lives in the fire station. When stations are aging, overcrowded, and suffering from issues like water intrusion, mold, poor ventilation, and inadequate living spaces, it becomes more than a building problem, it becomes a firefighter health and safety issue.

These concerns hit close to home for many of our members. Aberdeen’s fire stations were built in the 1960s and are showing their age. Hoquiam’s headquarters station was built in 1971. Like many departments across the country, we continue to face challenges with aging facilities.

Our members remain committed to serving our community while continuing to advocate for safe, healthy working conditions for the firefighters who serve it.

Water stains spread across ceilings. Mold creeping through walls. Sewage leaks. Toxic fumes drifting into living quarters.

Members from our locals in Washington State have responded to a manufacturing facility for a Hazardous Materials Response involving a reported catastrophic leak of a chemical from a tank, resulting in the now confirmed deaths of multiple people, and possible injuries to a firefighter. Please keep all the firefighters and EMS in your thoughts as they continue to deal with this.

We are all one family. Near or far. The brotherhood and sisterhood of the fire service feels this. Thank you East Pierce Fire & Rescue for this powerful statement.

With deepest sorrow to his family, friends, and fire family.

While we know its a long way away, last night in Boston, MA a veteran firefighter died in the line of duty.

Robert “BK” Kilduff Jr., a 24-year member of the Boston Fire Department, and Boston Firefighters Local 718, assigned to Rescue Company 2, died after being injured while operating at a structure fire in the Dorchester neighborhood.

BK was more than the uniform he wore. He was a father, a partner to his long term girlfriend, a friend, a firefighter, a labor leader, and someone who spent his life in service to others. He was known by many for his kindness, his commitment to the fire service, his support for firefighters and their families, and his volunteer work with the Gary Sinise Foundation.

For those who may not know, here locally, and nationally, the Gary Sinise Foundation does important work supporting military, veteran, first responder, and Gold Star families after life-changing injury, loss, and sacrifice. BK gave his time to help care for families walking through some of the hardest moments of their lives. Today, that care is being returned to his family.

We are aware that BK’s long-term partner is a resident of Washington State, and because the fire service is a family, support has already been offered locally through our Washington State Council of Fire Fighters.

His death is a painful reminder that this is a dangerous job. We rely on training and experience to do our best to ensure we come home to our families. We are deeply sorrow for his family and friends. Our hearts are with BK’s partner, their blended family, his children, his fire family in Boston, and every person who knew and loved him. May they feel surrounded, supported, and never alone.

A busy day already across Aberdeen and Hoquiam for your Local 315 firefighters.🚒🔥🚑

In just a 90-minute stretch, crews responded to 7 incidents throughout our communities. At one point, every frontline apparatus at Aberdeen Fire was committed to active calls, while both Hoquiam medic units were simultaneously out handling emergencies as well. A strong reminder of the increasing demand placed on emergency services across Grays Harbor.

No matter how busy things get, we remain committed to being there when you need us most.
