To strengthen community preparedness and enhance Ebola prevention efforts, OGERA conducted an Orientation of Ebola Community Champions in Bundibugyo District.

The orientation equipped community champions with essential knowledge about Ebola, empowering them to serve as trusted health advocates in a high-risk border district vulnerable to cross-border disease transmission.

Participants received training on the history of Ebola, modes of transmission, signs and symptoms, prevention measures, and the importance of early detection and reporting.
The trained Community Champions were linked to the OGERA (DIC), the community central Ebola response coordination point in Bundibugyo, to ensure timely, appropriate, and coordinated referral pathways.

As part of the practical sessions, participants developed community protection strategies, including promoting handwashing facilities, encouraging travel screening at identified hotspots, and raising awareness on preventive practices within their communities.

This orientation marks an important step toward building resilient communities that are informed, prepared, and actively engaged in preventing the spread of Ebola.
By empowering Community Champions, OGERA is strengthening the first line of defense against disease outbreaks and reinforcing community-led public health preparedness.

OGERA has conducted a 5th Ebola Awareness Hotspot-Based Dialogue engaging Refugee and Migrant women experiencing heightened risks at the Busunga border point in Bundibugyo District.

The engagement has been facilitated by the Ebola Response Team from Bundibugyo General Hospital aimed at improving participants’ understanding of Ebola transmission, signs and symptoms, prevention, and response strategies leading to improved risk perception, reduced misinformation, stronger community engagement, and increased early reporting of suspected cases.

The Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials disseminated during the session have enhanced participants understanding of Ebola Awareness, preparedness, prevention and control among our community members

The continued collaboration with district health workers, partner organisations and community members will sustain community awareness, enhance vigilance, support referral pathways and community-based preparedness for Ebola and other emerging infectious disease threats.

OGERA conducted the 4th Ebola Awareness Hotspot Dialogue at First Bar Hotspot in Kisenyi, Bundibugyo District, to raise awareness and sensitize Refugee and Migrant Women experiencing heightened risks on the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak.
The session was facilitated by the Bundibugyo District Facility Surveillance Focal Person from Bundibugyo General Hospital, who provided accurate and up-to-date information on Ebola signs and symptoms, modes of transmission, prevention measures, available treatment and care, and the importance of early detection and reporting.

During the dialogue, participants received Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials on Ebola to reinforce key prevention and response messages. The materials were designed to improve participants’ understanding of Ebola transmission, prevention, treatment, and referral pathways. This has contributed to strengthening Ebola preparedness and response among our community who often face barriers to accessing timely health information and services.

The interactive discussion also addressed common myths and misconceptions surrounding Ebola, promoted positive health-seeking behaviors, and guided participants on where and how to report suspected cases. Through the peer-led approach, the dialogue enhanced awareness, encouraged community vigilance, and strengthened the capacity of participants to identify potential symptoms early and make timely referrals to appropriate health facilities, contributing to broader community efforts to prevent and respond to Ebola outbreaks.

OGERA has implemented the 3rd Ebola Awareness Hotspot-Based Dialogue Session, with emphasis on strengthening the OGERA - Bundibugyo Regional Sub Drop-In Centre (DIC) as a community platform for Ebola prevention, preparedness and response.

The meeting held at our Bundibugyo Sub Drop In Centre (DIC) has engaged representatives from the District Health Office, Village Local Councils, Village Health Team, Health workers , and Community Members, Peer Leaders, and Community Outreach Workers in understanding the respective roles in promoting Ebola awareness among Refugee and Migrant Women facing heightened vulnerabilities in high risk border districts.

The Ebola Awareness and response dialogue conducted aimed at improving the understanding of Ebola prevention practices, signs, symptoms, transmission, and treatment, including addressing myths and misconceptions thereby equipping participants with accurate information to support early detection, prevention and timely referral.

The orientation also reaffirmed the role of the Bundibugyo DIC as a community entry point for health promotion, risk communication, referral, and linkage to essential services through the peer led mechanism.

The sessions conducted will contribute to a resilient community based and culturally appropriate approach in responding to Ebola and other emerging infectious diseases threats among our community members.

OGERA has conducted two (2) separate Ebola Awareness Hotspot-Based Dialogue Sessions targeting Refugee and Migrant Women experiencing heightened risks across selected hotspots along the Mpondwe–Lhubiriha border in Kasese District.

The sessions have been facilitated by Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) health workers from Hima Health Centre III focused on strengthening participants’ understanding of Ebola prevention and control measures, signs and symptoms, modes of transmission, available treatment and care, and addressing myths and misconceptions surrounding the outbreak.

In addition, the Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials on Ebola provided during the sessions enhanced participants’ knowledge of Ebola preparedness and response mechanisms, while reinforcing key prevention messages.

Overall, the dialogues have increased community awareness within hotspot communities, improved risk perception, reduced misinformation, and strengthened vigilance regarding the Ebola outbreak. They have also promoted preparedness and response measures aimed at reducing transmission, facilitating early identification of suspected cases, and strengthening timely referral and linkage to appropriate health services.

OGERA, under the ongoing Ebola Response Project, has engaged the Ebola Response Team from Bundibugyo General Hospital, district partner organizations, and other key stakeholders in the Identification, Mapping, and Profiling of Ebola Response Facilities and Referral Systems.

These engagements are aimed at strengthening coordination, referral pathways, and Ebola preparedness and response in Bundibugyo District.

The engagements have provided a platform for discussions on case identification, existing Ebola response and referral structures, isolation centres, response procedures, and the critical role of communities and grassroots organizations in promoting Ebola awareness, prevention, preparedness, and response.

The insights generated will inform OGERA’s upcoming community sensitization dialogues and contribute to strengthening coordinated, timely, and effective Ebola prevention, preparedness, and response efforts targeting Refugee and Migrant Women in high-risk border districts.

OGERA has embarked on implementing the Ebola Response Project targeting Refugee and Migrant Women in high-risk border districts.

As part of the project, we have conducted the Identification, Mapping, and Profiling of Ebola Response Facilities and Referral Systems in Kasese District to strengthen coordination, referral pathways, and Ebola preparedness and response.

We have engaged the District Health Office, Partner organizations, and Health workers as well as engaged the Ebola Response Team from Bwera General Hospital to align project activities with the National Ebola Response Plan.

We have also disseminated translated Ebola Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials to enhance awareness of Ebola signs and symptoms, prevention, treatment, and referral pathways.

Through this initiative, OGERA is strengthening sustainable referral systems and enhancing community preparedness for an effective Ebola response.

OGERA is participaing in the Uganda AIDS Commission (UAC) CSO Accreditation Meeting convened by the Uganda AIDS Commission for civil society organizations operating in Wakiso District.

The meeting has provided practical technical support and guidance on the UAC accreditation process, enabling participating organizations to successfully apply for and obtain UAC accreditation certificates.

Through this engagement, organizations are better positioned to register for accreditation, ensuring the smooth implementation, coordination, monitoring, and tracking of HIV/AIDS programmes.
The accreditation process will further strengthen collaboration between civil society organizations and the Uganda AIDS Commission, enhancing accountability and recognizing the valuable contributions of partner organizations toward achieving Uganda’s national HIV/AIDS goals.

OGERA remains committed to supporting interventions that reduce the risk and impact of HIV/AIDS among vulnerable and key populations, while advancing equitable access to prevention, treatment, care, and support services.

OGERA has participated in the second quarterly CSMMUA meeting alongside other coalition member organisations.

The meeting has leveraged on a presentation and participatory approach to meet its objectives of tracking the previously planned interventions per strategic pillar, identification of best practices and lessons learnt, collective planning of the second bi-annual 2026 period and development of the coalition risk assessment plan.

OGERA has engaged Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW) as Peer Leaders and PrEP Champions in a Comprehensive PrEP training conducted under the EmpowerHER Project, coordinated by UNESO with support from Aidsfonds.

The training has strengthened participants’ knowledge of HIV prevention, access to and effective use of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), stigma reduction, and the importance of making informed decisions about their health and wellbeing.

Through interactive learning sessions and peer-led discussions, participants are building their capacity to promote HIV prevention services, support PrEP uptake within their communities, and advocate for equitable access to quality health services.

By equipping AGYW with accurate information and leadership skills, OGERA is fostering community-driven approaches to HIV prevention and empowering young women to become champions of health, rights, and wellbeing within their communities.
