Today marked an important milestone as Extend A Life Initiative Uganda officially handed over the Poultry Income Generating Activity (IGA) to the community to promote ownership, sustainability, and self-reliance among child mothers and vulnerable young women. The poultry project, established under our economic empowerment initiative, aims to provide sustainable livelihood opportunities through poultry keeping, income generation, and improved household nutrition for child mothers.

During the handover, beneficiaries were encouraged to take full responsibility for managing and growing the project through proper poultry management, teamwork, savings, and business skills gained through continuous coaching and mentorship. The initiative is expected to strengthen financial independence, reduce vulnerability to harmful practices such as child marriage and exploitation, and improve the well-being of young mothers and their children.

This handover reflects our commitment to empowering communities with lasting solutions that create resilience, dignity, and sustainable development.

This was led by our BOD Vice chairperson, Local council chairperson, Executive Director, and the Head of Programs.

We attended a 3-day Grantee Convening Meeting, attended with support from Girls First Fund , provided a valuable platform for learning, networking, and sharing experiences among implementing partners working to end child marriage and empower girls. The meeting brought together grantees to discuss best practices, challenges, and sustainable strategies to strengthen community-based interventions.
Key topics covered during the convening included resource mobilization and governance. Participants gained practical knowledge on developing sustainable fundraising strategies, building partnerships, engaging donors, and mobilizing local resources to support project continuity and impact. The governance sessions emphasized the importance of transparency, accountability, effective leadership, policy development, and strong organizational structures in achieving long-term program success.
The meeting also created opportunities for peer learning, collaboration, and reflection on innovative approaches to improving the lives of vulnerable girls and young women. The knowledge and skills gained will strengthen project implementation, organizational capacity, and sustainability efforts within our community programs. Today, Extend A Life Initiative Uganda conducted a Business Coaching and Financial Literacy session for child mothers and out-of-school young women as part of our economic empowerment program. The session focused on equipping participants with practical knowledge and skills in budgeting, saving, income generation, record keeping, and responsible financial management.

Through interactive discussions and coaching, beneficiaries learned how to identify business opportunities, manage small incomes, and make informed financial decisions that can improve their livelihoods and support their families. The training also emphasized the importance of financial discipline, self-reliance, and planning for sustainable futures.

For many of these young women, access to business knowledge and financial literacy is a powerful step toward breaking the cycle of poverty, dependence, and vulnerability. By empowering them with entrepreneurship and money management skills, we are helping them build confidence, strengthen resilience, and create pathways to economic independence.

At Extend A Life Initiative Uganda, we believe that when young women are empowered with knowledge and opportunities, they can transform not only their own lives but also the well-being of their children, families, and communities.

This poultry house is more than a structure; it is a symbol of hope, resilience, and opportunity for child mothers and out-of-school young women in our community.
Constructed with support from Girls First Fund as part of our economic empowerment initiative, the poultry project aims to equip vulnerable girls and young women with practical skills, sustainable income opportunities, and improved nutrition for themselves and their children. Through poultry keeping, beneficiaries will gain hands-on experience in animal care, business management, and financial responsibility while earning income to support their daily needs and reduce dependence.
For many of these young mothers, poverty, school dropout, and early pregnancy limited their opportunities. Through this initiative, they are gaining financial independence, confidence, and a second chance to rebuild their futures.
Every egg collected and every bird raised represents progress toward reducing vulnerability, improving household nutrition, and preventing harmful HIV risky behaviors, including child marriage and exploitation.
When we invest in young women, we do more than fight poverty; we restore dignity, strengthen families, and create lasting community change.

She stands tall under the shade of a tree, holding a message bigger than her years: “I am a girl, I dream to change the world.” But behind that bold statement is a real question we asked together today: What kind of future can we build for her?

During our community dialogue, adolescent girls and young women spoke up about the income-generating activities (IGAs) they believe can transform their lives like tailoring, agriculture, small businesses, and more. Not just ideas, but pathways to economic empowerment, reproductive health services and independence. Because when a girl earns, she gains more than income.
She gains choice.
She gains voice.
She gains power to say no to child marriage and unintended pregnancies.

This is not just a conversation it’s a turning point.
• What if one intervention could keep a girl in school?
• What if one skill could be a turning point for a child mother?
• What if one opportunity could change her entire story?
We are ready to act. The girls are ready to lead.
Now we need partners who believe in their dreams.

Equipping girls with practical skills like bakery, poultry keeping, saop making empowers them to become economically independent and confident decision-makers. When girls earn an income, they are less vulnerable to poverty and early marriage. Skilling programs provide alternatives, keeping girls engaged in productive activities. Investing in girls’ skills is a powerful step toward ending child marriage and building resilient, self-reliant communities.

Women marry on average more than 5 years earlier than men. The median age at first marriage is 18.8 years for women aged 25- 49 and 24.8 years for men aged 25-49. The median age at first s*xual in*******se is 17 years for women and 18 years for men, indicating that women engage earlier in s*x than men (UDHS 2022).

Child marriage remains a significant barrier to girls’ rights, education, and health in Uganda, particularly in rural and underserved communities.
At Extend A Life Initiative Uganda, we implement community-driven interventions that address the root causes of child marriage, including poverty, harmful social norms, and limited access to education and adolescent-friendly health services.
Our approach integrates girls’ empowerment through mentorship and safe spaces, school retention support, and active engagement of parents, cultural leaders, and local stakeholders to promote behavior change.
With additional funding, we will scale these interventions to reach more at-risk girls, strengthen community protection systems, and achieve measurable outcomes, including reduced school dropout rates, delayed marriage, and improved reproductive health knowledge. This investment will contribute to sustainable, long-term impact by enabling girls to realize their full potential and actively participate in the social and economic development of their communities.
