Happy Family Youth Uganda is a grassroots non-government organization which was formed in April 2016 and registered under the government of Uganda. It was formed to help the key population members regardless of their race, gender, and social status with the need to support the community in areas of challenging stigma and discrimination, development of vocational skills, psychosocial support and to

champion health and human rights advocacy in areas of HIV and AIDS and Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR). The Organisation conducts HIV Counselling and testing, Health Talks and Referrals. Since 2016, we have reached over 400 s*x workers, transgenders, MSM The organization closely works with Most at Risk Populations (MARPI), Nsambya Home Care, Reach Out Mbuya, and Mild May Luweero

We equally have a shelter that provides refugee for people living with HIV, people chased away from their families because of their s*xuality, and those experiencing insecurity. This shelter further acts as a home for pyscho social support and skills development. We work in semi urban areas like Luwero, Mukono, Mityana, Kampala and Wakiso districts in central Uganda. Surviving in Fear: Mukisa Ronald’s Story of Persecution and Resilience

At Happy Family Youth Uganda (HFYUL) we continue to document the lived realities of individuals within Uganda’s Q***r community many of whom face violence, discrimination and persecution simply because of who they are. Ronald’s story is one of survival against overwhelming odds shaped by hardship from childhood and intensified by targeted persecution in adulthood.
Ronald’s story reflects the broader reality faced by many Q***r individuals in Uganda where violence, discrimination and persecution remain a constant threat. His experience is not isolated but part of a pattern that continues to affect countless lives. Today his story stands as a powerful testament to resilience, but also as a call to action. No individual should be forced to live in fear because of their identity and no one should have to flee their home simply to survive.
Ronald grew up in hardship after losing his father facing abuse and trauma as a child including the devastating loss of his sister. Despite this he pursued education and tried to rebuild his life but everything changed when he became a target because of his identity.
In May 2021 a shelter linked to the LGBTQ+ community was raided and 44 people were arrested. Ronald was later identified and taken. Fearing for his life he jumped from a moving police vehicle to escape sustaining injuries.
He was later arrested and detained where he experienced degrading treatment showing the lack of protection for people like him.
The danger extended beyond authorities. Ronald was lured by individuals posing as security personnel, detained, and extorted for money. These same individuals later targeted someone from his contacts Ibra who was violently attacked with a machete and lost his hand while they demanded Ronald’s whereabouts.
