Invisible illnesses are real.
Invisible pain is real.
Invisible people deserve to be seen.

This World Lupus Awareness Month, Lupus Initiative Uganda is raising awareness for the thousands of people silently living with lupus and other invisible disabilities.

Too many women and young people suffer without understanding, support, or timely diagnosis. Many face stigma, isolation, financial hardship, and emotional exhaustion simply because their illness cannot always be seen.

At Lupus Initiative Uganda, we are working to change that.

Through awareness, advocacy, education, and community support, we are helping people living with lupus feel seen, heard, supported and empowered.

This month, we are calling for:
đź’ś Greater public awareness
đź’ś Early diagnosis and better healthcare access
đź’ś Inclusion and dignity for people with invisible disabilities
đź’ś Stronger support systems for women and youth affected by chronic illness

Every conversation matters.
Every act of support matters.
Every life matters.

Join us in building a more compassionate and inclusive society where no one suffers in silence.

Together, we can turn awareness into action.

The financial burden in Lupus is real, we take drug holidays that we do not need because we cannot access medicines of rheumatologists because of money. Chronic illness poverty kicks in after sometime. Help the lupus community achieve this goal. Nothing is too small. MIGHT Foundation Nazzinda Ruth Derrick Mpagi Nassejje Mariam

The financial burden in Lupus is real. We're forced to take drug holidays just because we cannot afford the medication. This often leads to flares resulting into hospitalizations that are also costly.

Diagnosis is NOT based on one test alone. Doctors look for a pattern across:
- Symptoms
- Blood tests
- Urine tests
- Biopsy results
*Important notes*
- ANA is usually the first test (screening)
- Anti-dsDNA & Anti-Sm help confirm lupus
- Urine tests are critical to catch kidney damage early
- Skin biopsy is especially important for Discoid Lupus

Inflammation is the quiet fire behind lupus.
It doesn’t always scream. Sometimes it smolders.
For many of us, inflammation looks like joint pain that never fully leaves, exhaustion that sleep can’t fix, brain fog that makes simple tasks feel heavy, or organs working overtime in silence. It’s not “just stress.” It’s not “aging.” It’s the immune system misfiring and attacking the body it’s meant to protect.
In lupus, inflammation can rise even when we look “fine.” Blood tests may change before symptoms do. Pain may show up without swelling. Fatigue may be the loudest signal. This is why lupus care isn’t only about treating pain, it’s about calming inflammation early, consistently, and seriously.
Medication, rest, nutrition, stress management, and regular monitoring all matter. Skipping care because symptoms seem mild can allow inflammation to do long-term damage, especially to the kidneys, heart, brain, and joints.
If someone living with lupus tells you they’re tired, in pain, or not okay, believe them. Inflammation is invisible, but its impact is real.
Awareness begins with understanding.
Care begins with listening.
