Ataro’s Story – From Forced Marriage to Dreaming of a Future

Ataro’s father wanted her to marry – because she had “nothing to do” after school.

Then she joined the Girls Parliament. She learned her rights, found her voice, and refused.

Today Ataro dreams of becoming a teacher – and helps other girls resist child marriage.

Every year in Uganda, 20,000 babies are born with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD). For families in places like Bukedea District, this diagnosis brings fear, exhausting journeys for fragmented care, and crushing costs. These children face immense pain, life-threatening complications, and barriers to simply living a full childhood.

We are changing this narrative. SCOEN is building the first dedicated Pediatric Sickle Cell Care and Wellness Centre in Eastern Uganda. This centre will be a beacon of hope—a place where children receive comprehensive, compassionate, and accessible care all under one roof.

Your donation will help create:

A child-friendly facility offering diagnosis, treatment, and pain management.
Critical support services like genetic counseling and psychosocial care for the whole family.
Community outreach to screen newborns and train health workers, building a sustainable support network.

This holistic centre will directly transform the lives of 300 children with regular care, screen 2,000 newborns, and serve as a centre of excellence for the entire region.
