Pray for
Sophia. She's one of the kids at our foundation, she was abandoned by her parents and domestically abused. She's grown up with us... However we've this situation of a growth under her tongue 👅.
Please pray that God heals her and provides the needed funds. We're the oral surgeon tomorrow at Mulago Hospital where we were referred. The treatment we've been receiving has only helped reduce its size but not curing it completely and it keeps coming back. We need a thorough diagnosis and proper medical recommendations.
What you're seeing in this video is a large, translucent, dome-shaped swelling under the tongue. This location is very characteristic of a ranula - which is a type of mucocele / salivary cystic.
What it most commonly is:
A ranula forms when one of the small salivary glands under the tongue, usually the sublingual gland, gets blocked or injured. Saliva can't drain normally, so it leaks into the tissue and forms a fluid-filled cyst. It looks pinkish / bluish, translucent, with small blood vessels on top, just like in the image.
Common causes / triggers:
- Blocked salivary duct - mucus plug or tiny stone
- Minor trauma - biting the floor of the mouth, dental work, piercing, or irritation from teeth
- Repeated pressure or rubbing from the lower teeth
- Less commonly, congenital variation where the duct is narrower
