PELUM Uganda PELUM Uganda works to improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers through fostering Ecological Land Use Management We:

Since 1995, PELUM Uganda has been working to improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers and the sustainability of rural communities, through the fostering of ecological land use management. Share skills and knowledge about good practices and techniques, through a broad network of likeminded organisations;
2. Undertake research and demonstration projects; and
3. advocate for policies that better support small-scale farmers. PELUM Uganda is part of a 12-country-strong association of civil society organisations in eastern, central and southern Africa.

Connecting, Collaborating and Co-creating for Agroecology in Lango!

Today, PELUM Uganda is participating in the 1st 2026, taking place at Kyoga Resort Hotel in Amolatar.

Held under the theme “Connect, Collaborate and Co-create in Promoting Agroecology,” the symposium brings together farmers, policymakers, researchers, civil society, local government, cultural leaders, development partners and other agroecology actors to share evidence, local knowledge, innovations and experiences.

As agroecology continues to gain momentum as a pathway towards resilient, equitable and sustainable food systems, PELUM Uganda is proud to contribute to this important regional dialogue.

The symposium provides an opportunity to strengthen networks, exchange knowledge and generate evidence-based recommendations that can support the integration and scaling of agroecology in policies and practice.

Together, we can strengthen the agroecology movement and build food systems that work for people and nature.

Celebrating Indigenous Food, Seeds and Knowledge in Amolatar!

The 3rd is happening now at the Amolatar Town Council Offices, bringing farmers, partners and communities together to showcase the richness of indigenous food systems and locally developed innovations.

Organised by FAPAD UGANDA, Broederlijk Delen, PELUM Uganda and Vi-skogen/Vi Agroforestry, the fair provides a platform for farmers to exhibit and share their knowledge, practices and innovations.

The exhibition features a remarkable diversity of traditional household and farming solutions, including local cooking stoves, traditional food storage facilities, poultry houses constructed using locally available materials, indigenous seeds and local food plants.

Beyond the exhibits, the fair is a celebration of the knowledge held by farming communities and the importance of protecting indigenous seeds, promoting local food plants and strengthening resilient, diverse and sustainable food systems.

Our indigenous knowledge is an asset. Our local seeds are a treasure. Our food diversity is our resilience.

Community Seed Banks: From Storage to Seed Sovereignty

Community seed banks are more than storage facilities they are farmer-managed institutions that conserve resilient local varieties, preserve knowledge and strengthen Farmers’ Rights under Article 9 of the Plant Treaty and Article 19 of UNDROP. The AU’s growing recognition of their role is a major milestone.

Across Africa, farmers are showing that seed banks can be sustainable. In Zambia, farmers multiply seed, bulk 2–5 bags collectively and sell as a group, while income from meeting spaces and value addition such as sunflower oil and Bambara nut supports the banks.

But DUS (Distinctness, Uniformity and Stability) requirements remain a major barrier for farmer varieties. The answer is not to force indigenous seed into unsuitable systems, but to develop Quality Declared Seed (QDS) approaches that recognize diversity while ensuring quality.

Dr. Modester shared how Eswatini enables farmers to market indigenous seed as certified seed following Seed Services testing. In Uganda, JUDE SSEBULIBA of PELUM Uganda called for decentralized QDS, with district officers inspecting seed locally and MAAIF Uganda providing the certification label.

His message was clear: strengthen farmer–researcher collaboration, create demand for indigenous foods, and recognize that seed is not produced like food.

After decades of investment in formal seed systems where maize dominates 60–90% of Africa’s seed remains farmer-managed. The future requires a dual seed system, backed by financing, enabling policies and model laws not frameworks alone.

Strengthening Uganda’s Climate Commitments through NDC 3.0
PELUM Uganda, together with Regenerate Africa, participated in a four-day national technical review of Uganda’s draft NDC 3.0, convened by the Ministry of Water and Environment.
The review brought together government, civil society, researchers, development partners and technical experts to strengthen Uganda’s proposed climate commitments for 2030 and 2035.
💡 A key takeaway: NDC 3.0 must be more than a climate policy document. It should provide a clear pathway for implementation, investment, financing, measurement and accountability.
The process highlighted the need for:
✅ Credible baselines and measurable targets
✅ Clear institutional responsibilities
✅ Stronger climate data and reporting systems
✅ Greater involvement of local governments and non-state actors
✅ Clear climate financing pathways
✅ Better visibility of climate action happening at community level #
For PELUM Uganda, this is an opportunity to ensure that farmers and communities are not only beneficiaries of climate policy, but active contributors to its design, implementation and accountability.

We are in Lilongwe, Malawi!
Today, we have arrived in Lilongwe to participate in the Rooted in Diversity (RiD): Partnership for Food Security and Livelihood – Annual Partners Meeting, officially kicking off tomorrow, 28 September 2026.
Under the theme “Celebrating Progress and Strengthening Implementation through Mid-Term Learning,” the meeting brings together RiD consortium partners and key stakeholders from participating countries to reflect on progress, share experiences and lessons, and strengthen collaboration towards achieving the project’s objectives.
The meeting will feature a range of engagements, including:

🤝 The RiD Global Project Meeting
📚 Sharing experiences, lessons and good practices
🌾 Field visits to project sites by the Steering Group

PELUM Uganda will be hosting the Agroecology Week of Action 2026, a five-day (I.e 26th – 30th October 2026) convening dedicated to promoting agroecology, sustainable food systems, and the preservation of indigenous knowledge.

The week brings together farmers, policymakers, researchers, civil society, and private sector actors.

The Agroecology Week of Action (AWA) comprises four distinct but interconnected events:

a)Press Conference: Official launch and media engagement.
b)8th National Agroecology Actor’s Symposium: Policy dialogues, panel discussions, and workshops.
c)5th Agroecological Market Systems Expo: Exhibition of agroecological products, innovations, and market linkages.
d)16th Annual Indigenous/Traditional Food & Seed Fair: Celebration of cultural heritage, seed diversity, and traditional foods.
