We are setting up vegetable nurseries at our women's center in Kyampisi and we have identified and selected suitable vegetables and acquired quality seeds, pots, compost and raising of beds.
Our biggest challenge now is lack of stable water source, as currently we rely on a pond nearby. Our nurseries need water consistently, and mulching to control weeds and retain moisture, and protect the seedlings from pests and diseases to ensure a healthy start for the vegetables.
Later we shall transfer our seedings into our Kitchen gardens at the women's center and some will be donated to women beneficiaries to grow at their homes.
Access to nutritious food, promote income generation through surplus sales and offering a safe space for women to work, and foster community education on nutrition and sustainable practices is one of the goals of Kyampisi Women Empowerment Resource Centre
Our project also helps reduce domestic inequalities in malnutrition and contribute to increased family well-being and financial independence for women.
Benefits for Women::
Improved nutrition: Women and their families have consistent access to fresh, healthy, and diverse vegetables, improving overall dietary intake.
Economic empowerment: Surplus produce can be sold at local markets, creating a source of income and increasing household savings, as well as providing women with autonomy and respect.
Skill development: Women receive training in sustainable gardening, composting, nutrition, and hygiene, which they can apply at home and pass on to their families and communities.
Mental and emotional well-being: The gardens provide a safe and rewarding space for women to engage in physical activity, reduce stress, and build self-confidence.
How KWERC Implements the Project:
Training and education: We train women on how to establish and maintain kitchen gardens, often using low-cost and sustainable methods.
Community involvement: The initiative encourages community participation, with selected members trained to become community trainers to ensure knowledge is shared and the gardens are maintained.
Resource provision: Our organization provides necessary materials, such as seeds and tools, to help women set up their gardens.
Focus on family and community: While centered on women, kitchen gardens often involve the entire family, promoting coexistence and shared responsibility for nurturing the plants.
Kyampisi Women Empowerment Resource Centre supports kitchen gardening projects to empower unskilled women and provide income for poor families.
Our centre has implemented a project in Namanganga village to improve nutrition for women and children through kitchen gardens.
We also work with women in sorrounding communities (56 villages of Kyampisi Subclunty) to establish home-based gardens, leading to increased income and food security.
