The future of digital innovation is being shaped right here in Mukono.

Under the Refactory 10X Program, 40 young women are currently undertaking intensive training in Foundations of Software Development as part of a nationwide initiative targeting 500 young women across Uganda.

Implemented by Refactory Academy, the 10X Program is designed to equip young women with practical digital skills that open pathways to dignified employment and opportunities in the digital economy.

As part of the “Hire A School Lab” Initiative led by Outbox, the training is creating opportunities for young women to gain hands-on experience in building digital projects, strengthening problem-solving skills, and preparing for careers in technology.

Every day, the learning environment is filled with determination, collaboration, curiosity, and ambition as participants take bold steps toward transforming their futures through technology.

The program particularly supports young women aged 18–35, including refugees and persons with disabilities, ensuring that opportunities in the digital world are accessible and inclusive.

At Maendeleo Foundation, we believe digital skills are more than technical abilities , they are tools for empowerment, independence, and community transformation.

Today in Kabalagala, the MTN Internet Bus is more than just a bus parked at the KCCA Kabalagala Youth Skilling Centre it is a space of hope, learning, and new possibilities.

Inside the bus, young people sit side by side exploring computers, learning digital skills, and discovering opportunities that once felt out of reach. Many of the participants are refugees, carrying different stories, experiences, and challenges, but united by one thing the desire to learn and build a better future.

For some, this is their first real experience using digital tools. For others, it is a chance to strengthen their skills, grow their confidence, and connect to opportunities in an increasingly digital world.

The conversations, the curiosity, and the excitement in the room are a powerful reminder that access to technology and knowledge can create meaningful change in communities.
This is the current vibe in Kabalagala communities connecting, learning, and growing together through the MTN Internet Bus.

Ahead of the MTN Internet Bus Camp at KCCA Kabalagala Training Center, we are excited to share some inspiring success stories from our recent training sessions in Amuru, Atiak.

One of those stories is Daniel Andio’s journey.

When Daniel walked into the MTN Internet Bus training at Noah’s Ark Multi-Skills Training Centre in Amuru, he carried more than just curiosity he carried a strong desire to grow and become more confident in the digital world.

Although Daniel had basic computer knowledge, unreliable internet access and limited exposure to digital tools had limited his opportunities to fully explore technology. Many digital platforms and tools still felt out of reach.

But during the training, things began to change.

Session after session, Daniel immersed himself in learning. He explored the basics of computers and smartphones, practiced using Microsoft Word, and gradually tackled Microsoft Excel a tool he initially found challenging. Instead of giving up, Daniel remained determined, turning each challenge into an opportunity to learn.

One moment stood out most for him: discovering email communication. What may seem simple to many became a powerful gateway for Daniel — opening doors to information, opportunities, and connections beyond his immediate environment.

Today, Daniel confidently uses tools such as Google Drive and Google Maps, skills he had never used before joining the training. More importantly, he now believes in his ability to continue learning and growing in the digital space.

Inspired by his experience, Daniel plans to continue learning through online research and hopes to share his knowledge with others in his community.

His story is a reminder that digital access and skills can spark confidence, opportunity, and transformation.

Artificial Intelligence is rapidly transforming the world today, influencing how we learn, work, communicate, and solve problems. From healthcare and education to business and innovation, AI is becoming a powerful tool that is reshaping everyday life and creating new opportunities across all sectors.

For girls and young women in particular, this presents a powerful opportunity to not only benefit from these changes but to actively participate in shaping them. By gaining digital and AI skills, girls can confidently step into spaces that were once limited, becoming creators, innovators, and leaders in the digital economy. AI is no longer a concept of the future; it is here now, and it is redefining the way the world operates.

As we approach Girls in ICT Day, and ahead of the upcoming webinar under the EQUALS Her Digital Skills initiative in partnership with W4, Verizon, and GSMA, we invite our community to reflect and share.

What advice would you give to a young girl starting her journey in ICT but unsure where to begin? Your message could inspire her to take the first step into the digital world. Together, let’s build a supportive community that empowers more girls to participate in technology and engage in global conversations like the upcoming webinar on AI.

We continue to witness powerful transformation among young women in our programs. Many begin their journey with little or no exposure to technology, but through mentorship and training, they grow into confident digital users and future leaders.

These stories remind us why platforms like the upcoming Girls in ICT Day webinar on “AI in the World Today” are so important because they give young women exposure to global conversations, industry leaders, and emerging technologies that shape the future.
