The Democratic Republic of Congo generates over 500,000 tons of plastic waste annually, and less than 10% of that is recycled. This waste not only pollutes the environment but also contributes to a growing crisis, while the country faces an estimated housing deficit of over 4 million homes, leaving millions of families in substandard living conditions. Add to that an unemployment rate of 44%—particularly affecting women and youth—and it's clear that something must change.
Through our initiatives we’re responding to these challenges with action. Here's what we're doing to turn these obstacles into opportunities:
📢 Raising Awareness: Across the DRC, we’ve been engaging communities to educate them about the effects of plastic pollution and show them how this waste can be transformed into something valuable. People are beginning to see plastic waste in a whole new light—as a resource for change.
♻️ Plastic Waste Collection: With the help of local women, youth, and persons with disabilities, we’ve launched extensive plastic waste collection efforts. Not only are we clearing harmful waste from the environment, but we're empowering communities to take part in shaping their future.
🏗️ Training & Eco-Bricks: Our team has started training local populations to repurpose plastic waste into eco-bricks—a sustainable and durable building material. These eco-bricks are at the heart of our construction efforts and are key to creating affordable, eco-friendly homes.
🏡 Building Empowerment Centers: But these homes are more than just shelters—they will serve as empowerment centers, where we will train locals in social entrepreneurship. We’re equipping people with the skills to start their own enterprises, from waste management to eco-friendly business ventures. It’s about giving people the tools to turn waste into wealth, building stronger communities from the ground up.
With the challenges of plastic waste, housing shortages, and unemployment weighing heavily on the DRC, Upcycle Africa is working to create solutions that go beyond the surface. We’re cleaning the environment, empowering individuals, and building sustainable futures—all through the power of recycling.
Join us as we continue to drive this transformation. Together, we’re not just solving problems—we’re building a greener, more empowered Congo! 💚🏡

Did you know that the Democratic Republic of Congo generates over 500,000 tons of plastic waste each year? Unfortunately, a large portion of this waste goes unrecycled, contributing to environmental pollution and posing risks to public health. The country also has a significant housing shortage, leaving millions without adequate homes.

We are excited to announce the launch of the first-ever empowerment center structure made from plastic waste, which addresses both the plastic waste problem and the housing deficit. This space will be dedicated to skills development. As part of this project, Congolese youth (ambassadors) will receive hands-on training in waste management, learning how to repurpose plastic waste into valuable products such as building materials and constructing eco-homes.

We are eager to collaborate with individuals, organizations, and partners aligned with our mission to reduce plastic waste in the DRC. Together, we can forge a path toward innovative and sustainable solutions that benefit both people and the environment.

Women, persons with disabilities, and youth are actively involved in the waste collection, sorting, and construction processes. Our goal is to empower communities while demonstrating the value of turning waste into resources that improve lives.

If you're passionate about sustainable development and want to join us on this journey, let's work together to transform plastic waste into solutions that build a brighter future for the DRC and Africa at large.

Tiny plastic particles—microplastics—measuring up to 5mm in diameter are now everywhere, from everyday items like ci******es, clothing, and cosmetics to our oceans and food chain.

They enter the environment through plastic litter breaking down, plumbing runoff, and leaks from production facilities. Once in the ocean, they accumulate, posing a serious threat to marine life, ecosystems, and even human health. 🐟🌊

We must take action to reduce plastic waste and protect our planet. ♻️

We're tapping into the power of Indigenous knowledge to address the Triple Bottom Line—People, Planet, and Profit.

🔹 People: Indigenous practices uplift communities and preserve cultural heritage. By integrating these traditions, we can drive inclusive development and create new growth opportunities.
🔹 Planet: For centuries, Indigenous methods have protected biodiversity and maintained environmental balance. Embracing these sustainable practices helps us safeguard our planet.
🔹 Profit: Traditional skills in crafting and resource management offer innovative, profitable solutions. By incorporating eco-friendly materials, we create unique, marketable products and homes that support a circular economy.

Together, we can blend ancient wisdom with modern innovation to build a more sustainable, equitable future for all! 🌟🌿💚
