Hydromissions International Water for the Thirsty in Jesus' Name

I LOVE training!

These young boys spent the morning watching us install the pump, and while they were not technically part of the adult training, I could not pass up the opportunity to teach them a few simple ways to recognize common hand pump failures. Since they will be some of the many students using this well, I wanted them to feel included and equipped too.

True sustainability is not just about installing a pump. It is about making sure the people using it, young and old, understand how it works and know how to recognize common problems. Every pump will fail eventually, so part of our job is making sure communities feel prepared to maintain and repair them long after we leave.

People sometimes seem surprised when I answer “yes” to questions about whether we fail to reach water. Drilling is actually really hard. As much as we try to identify places where water is likely, sometimes we still come up dry.

Here in Uganda, that happened in Kabuye.

After coming up dry there, we kept moving forward, and in Samasanda, we found water.

But Kabuye is still on our hearts. Moving on didn’t mean giving up hope. We’re still praying that one day water will flow there too.

Today, we’re simply grateful to see water flowing for this community, and reminded that sometimes faith means trusting God enough to move on 💧

A new well 💧

When families take part in drilling their own well, they build more than infrastructure; they build responsibility, pride, and long-term care.

Simón and I got started in Shark Hole today! We are checking the new wells he drilled. When I check the wells, I am documenting location and details about the well so Hydromissions can keep track of all the wells located in the Bocas Del Toro province. After we check wells for the day, I work with the data in a program called “Mwater” that allows me to keep reports on each well and create maps of the locations.

“But it’s fun” was said about three minutes before we were in a downpour that absolutely soaked me 🤣

Sitting on the bow of an open boat in torrential downpours is not something I do every day, but it is not the first time this has happened 🌧️

I’m so glad I left my poncho drying in Basti while I shopped today🙄😅

This is a look at one of the stages of providing a well here in Panama. After Simón drills a well, he leaves the bailer bucket (that item in his hand) with the homeowners and they have the responsibility of cleaning their well before Simón returns with the manual hand pump. Cleaning the well is not difficult, it just requires stirring up the sediment at the bottom and dumping out the muddy water until the water starts to appear more clear. When the homeowners take on that responsibility, and truly clean the well properly, it gives us confidence that they will maintain the pump after we install it. We can install the pump the same day we drill (after doing some cleaning) and sometimes we do but generally we like to give folks time to clean out more sediment before the pump installation. The purpose behind trying to initially get as much sediment out as possible is that it’s less likely to clog the hand pump.

A selfie intro with my favorite Ngöbe driller 😊

Programs often start slowly as we learn to understand the unique conditions of each region. In Panama, we began by training several drillers before ultimately partnering with Simón. Even then, it took years for him to become known and trusted in Ngöbe communities, where relationships are built gradually and expressions of appreciation may look different than what we’re used to. Through love, service, persistence, and consistency, Simón is now greeted warmly in villages where trust once had to be earned step by step.

Yes, we are a well-drilling organization 💧
But more than that, we’re a team that seeks to build relationships at every well and share the love of Jesus with anyone who wants to listen 💜

Hydromissions provides clean water to everyone—no matter their beliefs—in the name of Jesus.

In this clip, Simón is sharing an audio Bible with a man in the community. As soon as it started playing, more men gathered to listen. This particular device contains the entire Bible in Spanish and Ngäbere (their native language). It’s durable, waterproof, and powered by a small solar panel, which is perfect for environments like this one in Bocas.

Love this!

Many homes are built over the saltwater, which makes drilling right next to the home impossible. We have constructed rainwater catchment before and even piped water from a jungle spring, but at the end of it all, the borehole water wells are really the ideal option so we just drill as close as we can without getting into the salt water. In this case, the homeowner truly took ownership for the well (yay!) and made this modification to help ease his access to the water.

This Easter, we remember the Lamb who carried what we could not. Echoing the ancient promise of atonement, Jesus bore the weight of sin for all people, offering forgiveness and new life. In Him, we find mercy, redemption, and the way to salvation ♥️

📸 Ocean City, NJ. 59th Street Pier, 2007. As the pier slowly fell away, it took on the appearance of crosses so it seemed to be a good backdrop for the Easter post.
